hi, i was wondering is it usual for a leo to come out during daylight. i came home from practice around 6:00 and he was just sitting near his calcium bowl. so i wandered over and he lapped up some calcium then wandered over to stare at me. after i sneezed he got afraid and went to hide. this is the first time i have seen him voluntarily wander during the day for more than 15 minutes.
so long stories short, is it normal for an almost year old gecko to sometimes wander around during the day? i am not home during the week due to school so i do not know his daily activities. thank you

If a gecko is feels safe in its cage and confident it won't be snapped up by an eagle or something, it'll often come out at various times during the day. Mine usually sticks his head out of his hide and just stares at me for a while in the morning - if it's bright he does the same thing, but with his eyes closed. :main_rolleyes:

Sounds like he was going out for some calcium and thought he'd observe the wildlife for a bit. ;)

Maybe you interrupted a secret ritual.
Some days I see mine out for longer than usual too, often on top of a hot hide. I suppose he's cooling off.
He also goes and sits in the water dish when it gets below a certain level, because I always forget to keep it topped off.

my gecko sounds very much like yours, mine sits on top of his warm hide too, except his has vine draped over it so it acts as a third hide. its actually his most used!

Mine are almost always active! My male is not he is the lazy one. But right now he is shedding and it is keeping me up. My females like to be out during the day especially when I wake up or just get home.

I think you have to start off at night with the feeding time. Take out the main hide. Clean up poop and change water and add mealworms to his dish ect. In other words, he or she might not like it at first but will learn that you are "providing" it with no threat.

Next is daytime. Here is where you have to go slow. You act like this is another maintenance task going into the tank. They don't like any quick movement and are startled easier during the day...... the little buggers. So basically it's just they know what to expect.

Handling should be done at night first and once he has your scent, and give it TIME to decide, it will let you know if it's OK or not. I just lay my hand in the tank close and let her get into her comfort zone ( or not ). I may move my hand 2 or 3 times and just go slow.

I will take mine out of the tank in the day time maybe once a week ( in the morning hours). Not for long but just to get the jitters out of daytime activity. Then mine would just peak out of her hide and watch. That led to being out and more in the open.

But they are finicky. One day they will act like all is cool and then dash for the nearest hide as if you let dogs out in her cage...lol.

Bonding with a gecko is a lot of work. You are really stuck with the luck of the draw because each one and I assume at a given age are similar to a cat. They just do what they want to do....lol.

Ours will come out a lot during the afternoon, especially with the new fake plants. They lay under it so we can see them but I guess they feel protected. Fitz will come out and watch us and follow us around (in his cage of course) whenever he is hungry, which just happens to be all the time. After you feed him he'll go lay on top of his hide and bask :)

My girl is sitting on my desk where is where I spend alot of my time during the day. She comes out all the time. She will sit and watch the dogs play and stalk my cat. She even will come out everytime I play my music. She is very social and I do believe she has arranged her schedule to spend more time with her "family". I think all geckos vary in their personality.

yeah, today my little female just went over to the corner of her tank that i was closest to and stared at me. :p she used to spend alot of time in her cage, but then she realized i wasnt a threat. I'de stick my hand in her cage and she would climb up me. One time she climbed on to my back where i couldnt reach and my dad had to grab her before she jumped.
