Death Sentence

I have a new gecko. So, here is the story:

I work at a big chain pet store. I came back after a few days break..to discover that one of our adult geckos had broken a leg and was in our recovery room. I took him over to the vet.....his answer was to put him down. Now, not to be rude or question his knowledge..but this tends to be this certain vet's answer to any problem with most of the store's sick animals. Neither myself or my store manager accepted this as the best solution. We had x-rays done. The vet said he would never walk right again and again suggested euthanasia. He also said if we really wanted to we could just tough it out and see what happened. So, we did. 5 weeks later..here he is! He walks normally. You can not even tell which leg was broken.

He's a monster eater and a major cutie!

awwwww! Glad to hear that! Most leos that break their legs, have them heal back rather quick and you can usually never tell what leg it was.

Leo's are so good at healing themselves most of the time. It always shocks me when vet's recommend to just euthanize them. I'm glad he made such a great recovery!

That is a really great story with a wonderful ending
He is beautiful!

:main_thumbsup:

I am not sure why many vets recommend euthanasia for a lot of animals that can be rehabilitated-but it is something often heard in the vets office

Glad to hear he is as good as new!

Why don't you buy this guy? I bet he would love to have a REAL home, rather than a pet store... :)

Thats a great story. Our reptile Vets even the normal vets, don't like euthanizing unless they have too. A while back some people brought in a tortle with a broken leg. Dr C made a little skateboard for it. It was really cool.

Good to know he'd recovered well. I'm quite suprised to hear the vet's recommendation to euthanize the gecko when its just a broken leg. Did he heal on his own? Or did he put plaster on? I remember seeing a pic of a gecko with plastered leg some years ago...

Because of where the break was he said he could not do anything for it.

And in reply to someone's post about buying him.....the company gave him to me for free. : )

wow....unfortunate about the vet.......The vet we take the animals to from the store I work at almost never recommends euthanasia unless it is truly truly truly a hopeless situation......I actually think they don't recommend it sometimes when they really should.
