I have heard that Crested geckos carry crypto and this worries me. I do wash EVERYTHING but I have a good amount of Neocalglucon left from when my crestie developed MBD and I would like to use this for one of my leos. The dropper was rinsed only with warm water since it was not any sickness associated with bacteria and was only being used with one gecko. But the dropper tip was dipped in the calcium liquid repeatedly... so even if I used a sterile new dropper, could the liquid be contaminated? Does anyone know where I could order some new Neocalglucon or is this vial safe to use?? :main_huh:

I’ve heard crested geckos “naturally” carry crypto, but I don’t know how true that can actually be as I’ve heard crypto is not passed from mother to egg…

I don’t truly know though.

i haven't heard of anything like that. maybe in the past they carried it more often when wild caught cresties were still being imported but i dont think they would be much of a risk if you have a healthy gecko from a good breeder and keep it in a clean environment. i have 26 cresties and they all appear healthy. I have currently 23 leos and adding more and my current leos appear healthy. though i may be wrong but i haven't seen anything wrong with mine *knock on wood*

I know the leopard geckos carry crypto naturally. If stressed, or introduced to another that is showing signs, then of course this will bring it out.

And you got this information from... where? :main_robin:

Got to ask, how does this have anything to do with ethics?

This article has ALL the CORRECT information regarding crypto :main_rolleyes:

It makes me so angry when incorrect information is thrown around like it's common knowledge. :furious:

Ron Tremper may be one of the largest breeders there is, but I can assure you he has no professional medical training.

Most animals have a controlled infestation of benign parasites if they are never treated for them.......yes even captive bred geckos.

Parasites may even me an incorrect term also, as future research may prove their relationship with the host to even be mutualistic.

I honestly don't understand why some people treat fro parasites on otherwise healthy animals. I find it much better to support a healthy immune system.

Holistically, there is a "normal" balance of energy consumption, energy usage, and parasite load that allows reptiles to maintain a decent body weight, growth, reproductive success and longevity.

Yet in captivity, we(all of us) have listless overweight geckos. And we take away everything that would allow them to be active trim healthy. We do not allow exercise(sweater boxes), we keep them at the lowest possible temp, we feed them on a schedule, that does not reflect anything of the animal's natural strategy.

I offer a wide range of temps and I do not get overweight fat captives. Getting fat is a sign their metabolism is too low. Getting overwhelmed by parasites is a sign that their immune system is out of whack. Yet we do not change the conditions that cause these, instead we take them to the vet.

Again, diseased geckos SHOULD go to the vet, the above is not disease, its conditional and can easily be prevented with proper husbandry. Consider, proper husbandry is husbandry that allows the animals to have normal natural defenses against such things as parasites.

Why not give them the BASIC choices they make in nature. As in a range of temps instead of a TEMP.

This to me is, heck I have no words for it. All field workers KNOW that reptiles use a full range of temps, yet in captivity people offer, 84.6535342F, then wonder why you have problems. Hmmmmmmmmm

Then state, my conditions are good, because they are what I was told to do. Not good because it allows the animal to prosper.

First of all, I do NOT want to see this thread become a bashing of any breeder, their business practices, or ethics. If it continues down this path, TOS infractions will be flying.

Secondly, it is completely false that all geckos have crypto. A few years ago, we had Dr. Kenneth Harkewicz here as a guest for chat, and the topic was Cryptosporidia in Leopard Geckos. (Somewhere we have a copy of that chat log, and when I find it I will re-post it). He dispelled the myth that all geckos have crypto, and had a few choice comments about non-veterinarian 'experts' making these untrue claims.

Just to clarify, my above post was not referring to Cryptosporidia, Coccidia, or other "diseases". I was referring to natural benign "parasites".

And Frank Retes never earned a degree in Biology............but he is probably one of the better "biologists" there is.

I'm certainly not saying RT is right....I'm merely pointing out that degrees are not the only way of accumulating knowledge. Degrees simply demonstrate you have the ability to learn. Its merely a start, your education is supposed to give you the tools to learn, not teach you everything you need to know about a certain field.
