Egg Problem!

My leo eggs have begun to develop a stale odor. They are 90 day in at 80degrees in hatchright substrate. They appear normal in color and size (about double the layed egg size). Are these lost causes, or should I continue to wait?

These are the first I have tried to hatch.

90 days is kind of long for 80 degrees. I incubate at 80 and the longest an egg has taken has been 65 days. I suspect they are no good, but the prevailing wisdom is to incubate until they get moldy and stink. At that point (and you may be on the way to there), if you want you could cut open the egg to see if there ever was anything in it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply! I have been searching the site to see if anyone else has noted bad odor with seemingly good looking eggs.

I'll wait a little while more....

Unfortunately for some reason, eggs can continue to look great on the outside but not be good on the inside. We had some eggs that went for their entire expected period, and the shells always looked good, they seemed to grow in size and everything; but we came to find that the eggs were actually empty. There was nothing inside at all, just fluid.

What does it look like when you candle them? If it is solid black, then there is a baby (dunno if it is olkay or not), then by this time, if you see clearness, then there may or may not be a baby in there.

But 90 days is kinda long though. But on this forum, after reading old topics, there were a few overdated eggs that had live babies in there when the owner pipped them, some didn't survive, so if you think it is alive, then don't pip it. When it goes over day 100, I'll pip for sure. (By knowing me, I'll give it day 120, because I am afraid to accidently kill anything)

Thanks for the egg pix link. I think these are probably infertile since they candle yellowish. Now I don't feel so bad about it (been waiting a long time!)

I'll just keep trying when Rainbow lays again. These were left in the hatchrite in a deli cup at 80 degrees in the habitat. I have an incubator, but was out of town most of the summer and didn't want to chance leaving it unattended. Do you know a good site to show how to set it up? Hovabator.

The Hovabator should come with instructions, although I remember they weren't the greatest, and it took me awhile to figure out what I was supposed to do lol ..Wish I could help, but it's been awhile :main_rolleyes:

Babies at 114 days!

[SIZE:main_laugh: ="4"][/SIZE]

Can't believe it! Today my second set of eggs hatched out within hours of eachother (2nd set of eggs layed 114 days ago) with two perfect little babies.

I had almost given up since candeling was inconclusive ( I was seeing lots of empty egg with just a little blob of striped black-thought for sure they were half formed little dead embyos, but couldn't bring myself to toss).

I have them in a 10 gal with underpad heat and moist hide and a very low level water dish. I understand they won't often eat until shedding the first time. What temp is best to keep them? Right now its around 83 on the warm end and 75 on the cool side.

I'm very glad I didn't pip or toss!

Thanks for all your encouragement!

That's GREAT! and wow, they hatched after 114 days? Very nice, you'll have to post some pics :main_yes:

And yes, as you have seen, you can't necessarily see the entire baby when candling an egg. Most of the time, you will only see part of it :main_yes:

The warm side should be much warmer, at least up to 90 degrees, although babies like even warmer temps, so if it gets up to 92-94 degrees, that's fine as well.

I am so glad they hatched for you!

Thanks for the info on temps.

Babies seem to be doing fine. Thanks for the info on temps, I have added a heat lamp to one end and a moist hide to the other with multiple little hide places.

When will they shed? Is it true they won't eat until they shed?

Thanks for the help,

G:)

They can shed anywhere from 1-4 days, just check for poop daily, and as soon as you see it (or catch them shedding), then you know :)

I have never tested the "they don't eat until they shed" part, I've just always assumed it to be true. You could technically try feeding them if you want, but I don't think it's really necessary unless they seem to take a long time to shed. I would just leave them be, they usually shed around day 2 or 3 :main_yes:
