Electric was off for 5 hours-what about my 200 eggs?

Hi All, Two days ago a electric line frayed and caught a tree on fire and my house was surging really bad so I rushed to turn all lights off. I listened to my scanner to find out what happened and then drove down to the street that starts our division and talked to the Firemen. They told us they had dispatched the electric company but it may be hours before they get there. This happened at 6:23pm and it was a very hot day outside. The electric company finally got the electric back on at 11:23pm So I go in and check the incubators and one reads 70 degrees and one reads 75 degrees. My question is did I lose the eggs? I do not think it was that low for very long but I had Leo eggs and crested eggs in there. I am sure the crested eggs are OK but what about my Leo eggs? Any thoughts are welcome. Last year my daughter bumped the incubator knob and the temp went up to 100 and it was full of dragon eggs and all except two survived. so I pray these will be find too. But I just need assurance! Thanks, Deb

chances are if the temp lowered and did not raise then you should be fine. seems most time problems occur when there is a sudden increase rather than decrease.

Last year our electric went out for over 6 hours in the middle of winter. Our two incubators dropped into the low 60's during that time. We had about 50 eggs at that time, and we didn't notice any negative effects. I hope you have the same luck:)

Deb-

I hope that all of your eggs hatch for you-

You may want to invest in a UPS for your incubator. I have 2 UPS's. One is running the incubators and the other is fully charged incase the electric goes off long enough to drain the first one.

They are really not that expensive when consider the cost of losing a couple of hundred eggs.

Don't thye only las a few minutes? I think I looked into them once and was disappointed about the lenght of time they work for. Ofcourse most power outages and but a second or two from what I've seen here.

Thanks everyone for your help, I was really worried so I just got a small generator( just to use for the incubators) I have had 10 eggs hatch last night and today so I think they will be fine. I am so glad. I would just die to lose so many babies like that. I love each and every one. It is so hard for me to sell my babies at shows but we can't have too many right!!! So far(last night and today) I have gotten 4 Rainwaters, 3 Blazing Blizzards and 3 Bold Stripes. Yippee! Now I just wish my Bells would lay some eggs! My trempers are doing OK, My PA's are doing good, my SHT are doing fine( they are electric too which is SO cool) and my red stripes are doing OK and I got stripes jungles plus I have 4 snow x SHT's het RW born too. This is my first batch of snow and SHT's and I am not sure what to look for but time will tell. Again a great big thanks to you all!!!!!!!!!! Deb

I just had this happen last night!! The power went off for ten - yes, TEN - hours because of a "broken power pole". :main_no: I kept checking on the incubator, which never got below 74 (normally it's at 82), so I'm hoping I'm in the clear. What a way to lose sleep!! :(
