Enigma Questions?

These may not be answerable, but after receiving an enigma yesterday i have many questions about this morph...

These may have also been answered before but I've been searching for the past two hours and I'm still empty handed.

What visible markings clearly define a enigma?
What are the side effects of enigma syndrome?
Why if this morph has so many problems were they continued to be breed?
Does red eyes have anything to do with being an enigma?
Can enigmas possibly be blind?

My enigma is wandering circles. He seems not to rest. He does not act like he can see you. He seems to do "circles" ALOT.

When I received he it was almost as if he had not ate in a few day, and now that I got food in his belly, he does not stop to rest.

I was hoping to make a write up to show the store owner, so that she could understand more what was wrong with the gecko that she gave to me.

Thanks guys!

1) sometimes but not always they will have a U or horseshoe shape at the base of their head. and sometimes they dont have that last color band between their hips when they are babies.

2) head tilting, cirlcing, some are bad eaters.

3) i wonder this quite a bit myself, the only reason i can come up with is cus theyre pretty.

4) the gene creates a unique skin pattern as well as affecting the eyes. you will hear people talk a lot about a pretty 'enigma eye' they are usually deep red to orange in color.

5) i havent heard of the enigma gene being responsible for blindness but any gecko, enigma or not, can become or be born blind.

hope this helped:main_thumbsup:

I agree with that in the past. Now you are able to get enigmas which have NO negative affects from the mutation. There are still enigmas that have their flaws and disabilities but this is why selective breeding is so important.

Enigmas do have their flaws but when bred correctly you will have a very uniquely designed gecko with enhanced colors and patterns.

I think it's safe to say that the majority of Enigmas don't show the so-called "behaviors".

I only have 1 enigma (without symptoms) that I will be trial breeding this season but I have heard a range of opinions from people I pretty much trust going from "symptoms can crop up with any enigma with no warning and can appear as a result of any pairing" to "I've bred and sold over 300 enigmas without problems". So I don't really know what the situation is. I'll see what happens with mine this season.

Aliza, I'm test breeding one of our Enigma females (Indigo) this season that shows no symptoms and has been healthy as a horse (great eater, too). However, I purchased two others with her at the same time, and the male of the bunch circles, head tilts, and isn't a good eater at all. I'm hoping when crossed out from the enigma gene to our SHTCT male, that the babies will be healthy and strong.

it has been documented that enigmas that exhibit little to nearly no negative behaviors can still produce offspring that have severe negative enigma behavior.

In my opinion it is incorrect to say that most enigmas dont have the negative issues, they ALL have them to some extent; it is part of the mutation. It is more realistic to say most enigmas do not exhibit severe negative behavior.

I agree 100% with this statement...

As do I.

To add, the people repeating an "outcross" mantra are ignoring that that is pretty much how we got a huge glut of Enigmas on the market to begin with. People bred them with/to anything/everything they could in many cases. Outcrossing has actually resulted in more "exhibit" Enigmas being produced due to sheer volume than otherwise.

Just part of the bargain. :D
