I am currently beginning to breed, for the love of the animal. I have my mealworms steadily breeding (soon crickets, too) and my parents take care of the electric bill. My time isn't worth much money to me seeing as though I don't even have a job. I have one rack that will soon house 8 leos. In those 8 leos only 6 are mine and only 6 will be bred. I plan on breeding gecko A and B one season, next season B and D, next season E and A (those letters mean nothing, just an example) so I will only have one female laying per season. If I only get one female clutches per season, then hopefully by the next season I will have sold them and have room, otherwise I will cease breeding for a while. So I only plan on getting clutch(s) from 1 female per season. Hopefully this will not become overwhelming ( I highly doubt it will). My hatchling rack is only going to have 20 bins (at most), that should hold me off for a while. I plan on putting the leo up for sale at 15 grams. As for vet bills, my parent will (hopefully lol) make the inital payment on it, and I will pay them back with the money from my (future) job.

see that profit is the subject, selling price of such animals is totally ON SUBJECT espcially when someone claims and want to make someone believe that they can sell normals for $30 to your now $70

that can mislead someone to thinking they can buy a 10 lot of normals for $200 shipped (going rate) then breed them and then sell the offspring for much more than they even paid for the original breeders which would make it look like you can make a good profit and be in the black, ooops for you that would be green :main_rolleyes:

Matt, read the thread, thats all I can really say but for a quick recap if someone is asking about making a profit from an animal and wants to know if they can make money at breeding then someone follows up and says hey I sell normals for $30 to pet stores and others jump in and say I see them sell for $70 when we all (well I see not all) know we can buy 10 lots of normals for $200 shipped (or less), that can mislead a person to think they can make a decent profit off of little investment.

I understood that....but, ah I kinda get it now I didn't really understand your stance on it. I though you where for it. My last post could have been summed up with a "yeahbutwhat?" reply. Everyone ignore me!

I sell some normals to my local petshop every now and then, and I get $21 a pop for them, the petshop sells them for 60..... As far as my income from geckos, this is my first season, so you can imagine im WAY IN THE RED, to the tune of like probably close to 10-15 grand

See people; some pet stores sell at higher prices... The one I sell to prices them at $99.99 and they actually sell out every week. They are a great family run place thats been open for several decades and take great care of their animals.

Sure is... They don't by in bulk from a wholesaler. Before I started selling to them they breed their own.

I'm way in the red. This is my second season. Last year I only got a few hatchlings and kept them or gave them away to good friends. This year I'm doing better but have not made a dime because I have not put any up for sale yet. I'm waiting on getting my selling permit and for my babies to get to a nice weight. It will be a long time before I brake even let alone make a profit. I'm ok with that. It's just a hobby for me right now. eventually I would like to make money doing what I love, but I'm not going to be able to do it breeding leopard geckos alone.

on another note. I don't know why everyone is on Mike's case. I have seen normal juvie leopard gecko go in pet shops for 50-70 bucks. I have seen normal adults go for $99.99

I honestly don't know about revenue, but as far as Net Loss/Gain, I'd say probably -$91,567. lol If I get to factor in moving expenses, add another -$25,000 on to that. :uhoh2:

Paul, you've lived in WI for long enough, what have you seen the pet stores sell normals for?

Anywhere from $30 to $75 in the Madison area. I'd say the most common price by far is $45 though. I have no idea what they sell for in the Milwaukee area, although I do sell to a chain that has three stores in the greater Milwaukee area. I'm not going to disclose my wholesale pricing to anyone other than a retailer though. :D

Alot of family owned petstores dont buy enough to buy wholesale, thats why they pay more, which in turn they must charge more. Another example, I have a few beardies also, I know some petstores will only pay 20 for a beardie, but ive actually had some pay up to 40 for a beardie, Ive sold geckos from 15-25 to petstores, anything less than 15 seems like a waiste of time to me expecially when you could probably get at least 25 for them at a show. Apparently some people in here who are questioning prices have only been into chain stores who do buy wholesale, its normal in this area to see leos going for 50-70 for hatchings and 100 for adults, unless its a petco or petsmart

Atcually the family shops here do charge more as compared to petco/smart as for mormals they are $24.99 - $34.99 and they do buy wholesale but from distributers. Small pet stores normally have a distributer that buys large wholesale bulk to provide a larger variety of animals for a decent price, instead of having to buy 10 leos and 10 beardies or whatever from a wholesaler at $15 each plus shipping they can buy 3 of each from a distributor that bought 100 of each for $5- each and still get the wholesale price and no shipping just a $15 delivery charge per order.

Seeing Im the one questiong pricing I thought you should know that Ive never sold to a chain store (unless 2 in the counts as a chain) or dealt with a chain sote, not even a pet smart or petco or pet whatever, I see their ads but have never dealt with them.

I have supplied one of the stores here and as they sell them for $24.99 I surely do not get $30 plus for a normal. And I have supplied 2 stores in NJ that sold for $39.99 so I still did nto get $30 plus each for any normals.

Im done with this topic, its pointless.

IF you THINK you will get RICH selling leos, try it and get back to me when you DO!

If you think you can break even one day, you may, I did a year or 2 lol. But that's it, I broke even and that is not counting any labor or utilities or paper towels etc. Only animals bought vs animals sold and feeders. Im not counting any other expenses other than feeders and it took me 6 years to break even 1 or 2 years.
