This question made me laugh a little, so I did some figuring.

I spend $100 a month on food during the baby season, and $50 during the off season. So, not counting my initial investment, any new Leo purchases, the cost of caging, supplies, electricity, or the work involved, I spend about $1000 a year on crickets and mealworms alone. And so far this year I have sold about $250 in Babies.

So, that means I'm about $750 in the hole for this year so far. And that's not counting any other costs, including the 2 new racks I had to build this year.

Man, if my wife read that she'd kill me..... I only show her the sales and not the costs. :)

Atcually the family shops here do charge more as compared to petco/smart as for mormals they are $24.99 - $34.99 and they do buy wholesale but from distributers. Small pet stores normally have a distributer that buys large wholesale bulk to provide a larger variety of animals for a decent price, instead of having to buy 10 leos and 10 beardies or whatever from a wholesaler at $15 each plus shipping they can buy 3 of each from a distributor that bought 100 of each for $5- each and still get the wholesale price and no shipping just a $15 delivery charge per order.

Seeing Im the one questiong pricing I thought you should know that Ive never sold to a chain store (unless 2 in the counts as a chain) or dealt with a chain sote, not even a pet smart or petco or pet whatever, I see their ads but have never dealt with them.

I have supplied one of the stores here and as they sell them for $24.99 I surely do not get $30 plus for a normal. And I have supplied 2 stores in NJ that sold for $39.99 so I still did nto get $30 plus each for any normals.

Im done with this topic, its pointless.

IF you THINK you will get RICH selling leos, try it and get back to me when you DO!

If you think you can break even one day, you may, I did a year or 2 lol. But that's it, I broke even and that is not counting any labor or utilities or paper towels etc. Only animals bought vs animals sold and feeders. Im not counting any other expenses other than feeders and it took me 6 years to break even 1 or 2 years.
give it a break, you posted liek 2 or 3 times just saying its pointless and u just kept posting and he didnt even say anything else

ok i lied i didnt but a ferarri, im lazy and dont update my site so im probably 1-2 thou in the red

Paul, Ive only said this was pointless 1 time so you may want to correct yourself on that one.

I have replied to what others have asked and/or said and put in my 2 cents or -2 cents if you want to look at it that way.

Honestly its no one's business how much Ive made or lost and I may say Ive lost because Ive spent every single dime I made off selling to buy more stuff so I guess thats not really a loss so to speak its an inability to manage money.

Im not sure which HE you are speaking of, Ive replied to a lot of "he's" on this thread.

Marcia, Im sorry, Im not trying to squabble, just happens sometimes.

We are all well aware that the chances of making a profit from breeding leos is slim. However, it is not impossible, but it is impressive. I do not consider myself to be a breeder, however I will contribute that the only money I spent were on my actual leos themselves and their housing. My parents take care of the feeder bill (which isn't much considering my small collection) and the electric. That was the deal and I am content with that. I will not be the first however to say that when I did sell some of my leos, I did not make a profit. And all the money that was made went right back into my animals well being. And that should be our foremost priority as hobbiests and breeders alike. (Not to say any of you neglect your animals in the least, you all have very nice animals, and I admit I am often jealous of your geckos).

Good post Derek!

There are pepole who do make money or even a small living at breeding reptiles (not just leos) but they are few and far between and work their tail ends off to improve on the genetics and morphs available.

Id say look at it this way, In MY opinion these people make SOME profit:
HISS
GGG
Tremper
VMS
Alex Hue
Mark Bell
John Mack
Urban
A&M
Albey
and a few select others (and some of the above deal with more than just leos)
(PS sorry if I left anyone off, Im looking at this from a leo point of sales more than other species)

And look at how many people WANT to breed them for profit (or just to break even on the hobby). Its a very large difference.

The ones who do make a small to moderate profit have worked their posterior regions off long term, bought and worked with the best leos out there, improved on and created new genetic morphs etc.

I will just say that it is possible to make a decent living breeding reptiles, but it takes time, a lot of money, a decent business sense, creativity and most important of all: LUCK.

If you want to make money breeding reptiles you need to make the girls pay up after you breed them. Not a little of the money, not some of the money, but all of the money. If they don't I beat them. . .

I make the hatchlings go to work at two months in a brick factory as well.

Ahh Kelli with you I don't think it was luck but the love of the animal and the brains to do so much more!

You have done so much with the leos and I cannot even describe half of it (Im the resident genetics idiot)

good call Nancy. The apple could have fell out of the tree and hit anyone, but it took someone special (Newton) to realize what to do with the situation, instead of being pissed he just got cracked in the head. LoL. Ya know what im saying ;-) It might have been luck, but Kelli still had to have a good head on her shoulders to run with it and make it work.

So far, over the past couple of years, I have come out close to even. I have used 420gecko's method of only buying for geckos with what I have made on geckos, give or take a little.

Im in the red... So far ive only made one "sale" ...by giving a gecko to a friend. I breed for fun. There are geckos that I want, so I started a few different projects to produce them. And when I hatch out my first super giant super snow blazing blizzard, or RERS that will be "profiting" to me :main_yes: Im not even going to guess how far into the red I am, but I do know that its pretty far, considering a few of my geckos cost $200-400
