I am curious about what people think about bio-engineering the genome of the leopard gecko to radically change various phenotypic traits...

Selective breeding has it's dangers; like an accumulation of mutations which ultimately leads to neurological problems, like with enigmas and other inbreed morphs. What I suggest is a safer way of manipulating gecko DNA is to introduce foreign sequences of DNA , via bioengineering, to create the desired product. This will allow us to avoid the accumulation of dangerous mutations.

For Example: Would you buy a leopard gecko that was engineered with the Green Florescent Protein [GFP extracted from a jellyfish], so that he would glow in the dark!? I would buy two so I could breed them :main_yes:

Its been done with mice, cats and dogs, even glowing fish and axolotls are available for sale... This is the next frontier of gecko breeding!

I think it's pretty interesting. I've always been really into crazy stuff like this and as long as the geckos aren't hurt by this I don't see an issue.

The only thing I'm seeing against this is that if they can't control it or turn it off it may be an issue at night. I mean they like the dark so being your own night light seems like it would be annoying if all I want it to curl up in a dark warm spot lol.

I would definitely buy one, I think it would be really cool... Then I wouldnt even need a red night light to view the little guy.

If you've read as much science fiction as I have in my past, it seems as if it should already be here. Otherwise, please send us at Gecko Time (www.geckotime.com) something along these lines around April 1.

Haha I love how controversial it is!

Thanks for the input everyone... I propose breeders breed for positive behavioral traits. Forget about aesthetics and focus on creating animals with the robust brains! [that's for another post]

Also, can anyone locate a sequenced genome of the leopard gecko online anywhere!? It would cost like 100$ to sequence their genes; and then we could reveal mutations in various morphs and outbreed them...

GENETIC DIVERSITY is GOOD

...and then we can incrementally alter their DNA to give them wings and a consciousness... ;)

The glowing fish are infertile/can't be bred, right? Don't know about the others ... I dunno, if I wanted something that glowed in the dark I'd get a jar of fireflies, not a leo. :p
