well, this Christmas morning my 14 year old black lab Candy started having real bad dry heaving, kept falling when she tried to stand, and all those other symptoms of old age passing. we rushed her to an emergency vet hospital right before midnight. they took her into the other room to get her ready to be put down. i wanted to be there with her when it happened. well, she always was terribly afraid of the vet whenever we took her. and i guess when they took her into the other room her heart stopped on its own. i feel soo, soo, soo bad that i wasnt there, with her, and the last thing she saw was a bunch of strangers, in a strange room, on a cold metal table. i loved her so much, she very much was my child, and best friend. she passed away at 12:03 am on december 25, 2009. i will always treasure and remember the times we had and all the great memories she shared with my family and I. she was the most loyal, obediant, and trust worthy dog i have ever met. I love you Candy, and im just glad you aren't hurting anymore. i'll be there with you in the next life Can...

RIP Candy. How lucky for both of you that you got 14 wonderful years together though.

Well put! My condolences...
And if it makes you feel any better, I work at a 24hr emergency animal hospital and when a pet is passing, everyone that I work with always tries to make the pet as comfy as possible and treats the animal as one of their own with soothing words and whatnot. I know that it is really hard, and it is really hard on us vet techs/vets when we have to help or see something pass. So even though she was with strangers, I can assure you that she was with strangers that cared.
I am sorry for your loss, but its really great that a lab got 14 wonderful years!

I'm so sorry for you untimely loss. It never does get easier. I'd like to reassure you, as did Melanie. Whenever I am involved with an animal who is a euthanasia case, that animal stays in my lap the entire time it is away from it's owner, I don't EVER leave that animal in a cage, it's ALWAYS with a human being. Every effort is made to ensure the most comfortable process for both of you. So don't worry, someone was giving him lots of love the whole time. Please understand the grief process and what it is, and understand you might have a difficult time with a few of the steps. We're all here if you need us. :)
