I was curious as to how many eggs a female leopard gecko will lay in one clutch. I've heard it depends on the age of the gecko, is this true?

Oh ok. Interesting. I've been thinking about eventually breeding my female. And I'm not sure of her age because she was given to my by my sister and they found her in her garage. And shes probably never bred before. And shes probably over a good 5 years old. And I don't want to be stuck with TOO many babies if I couldn't find them homes for them right away if i decided to try to breed her. I'm obviously doing a bunch of research before I try doing it. I just think it would be fun to try for a one time thing to see how i like it :]

Eggs will vary from female to female but they can lay up to 16 eggs or so. I'd say a average is more like 8 to 12 fertile eggs. The older a female gets, the less eggs they tend to produce. My experience with first year breeders has been that most have produced decent numbers of fertile eggs. Rarely have I gotten just a few fertile eggs from first year breeders.

Thank you for this info as I'm dealing with a first year breeder. My female currently has laid 4 clutches this year (her first) and all have had 2 eggs but none have been fertile. Have you ever seen anything like this?

Non fertile eggs can come from a male shooting blanks, females having issues with their repro system, missing ovulation, her rejecting sperm, etc. I would try to pair them up again and try to visually see the mating. If you continue to get infertiles, try again next year with a different male to see if it may be him or her having issues.

Also as far as how many eggs they will lay. I have had first year breeders drop 15+ clutches (30eggs) and have also had them drop one clutch of slugs (happened this year too). There is no way to guarantee or estimate egg production for virgin girls. Just get them to a good healthy weight with plenty of supplements and continue to feed her well throughout the season and you will get as many good eggs as she is willing to produce. I am not one to breed multiple times in a season (I feel it is extra stress for a girl...she wants to give me 2 or 30 I am fine with that) but this can help increase the number of clutches as well.

I'm just curious how you know for a fact that the eggs aren't fertile? Personally I wouldn't count them out till they rot and start to stink.

If you candle them and there is no vascularity then I will incubate them for 2 weeks and check again. If there is still nothing, then I will toss it. You also can usually tell because the egg will feel soft and gelatinous inside.
