how to ship from U.S. to Philippines?

An even harder question: If a geckoforums member from the Philippines wants to get a gecko from the U.S., what would he have to do? He asks if he could carry geckos on the airplane. I don't think so (?).

How would such a shipment be arranged, which carrier would do it (is it airport to airport?), is there a quarantine phase, and what fees would be incurred?

Has anybody experience with that?

You will need to have a valid export permit, know the CITES laws for different countries, CITES permits if needed (I don't believe leopard geckos are on CITES), get veterinary certificates, and probably have someone in the Philippines that can handle the import paperwork and pay the VAT fees or duty & taxes. Otherwise, find someone here in the USA that can do the exportation for you.

See that's the problem with having great geckos at great prices.

The transportation would be more costly than the handful of pretty geckos I have :main_laugh: But it's amazing that within one week, I got an inquiry from Canada, Hongkong, and the Philippines. :main_rolleyes: I feel totally flattered, and am sorry that I cannot help those guys.

What is CITES, exactly?

Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species

A treaty that has been in place between numerous nations to regulate the trade of species based on the health of wild populations. Setting maximum export/import numbers (sometimes set to zero), mandating shipping conditions and prerequisites and used as a reference by many legislative bodies.

They list species in categories of concern, depending on the stability of wild populations, revising the status of animals as their conditions change.

CITES is a good place to start investigating international sales, but the countries involved will usually have their own requirements, paperwork, permits and permissions above and beyond that.

And yeah, Leos aren't a CITES listed species.

Edit: Anyone thinking of shipping internationally should also be extremely aware of exchange rates and extremely wary of fraud. While there are honest herpers who are looking to buy internationally, shipping to some nations dramatically lessens the legal protections afforded to either party in a transaction. The federal governments and banking institutions of, for example, China or the Philippines simply do not give a damn if their citizens rip off someone in the United States.

One way to avoid fraud with currency exchange rates is to use paypal only and send the customer an invoice, which would be in US dollars. That puts the exchange rate in their corner. Do not accept a money order of any kind!

It sucks, doesn't it. I need to find a shipper to help me in the future. I just don't sell enough for the permits/etc to be worth it. :(
