Beleive it or not i dont have one in any of my tanks though i have tried with no sucsess. My reptiles simply will not have it and dig out all the substrate weather its moss, coca earth etc

They are all very healthy and active and have never had an issue shedding.

Mine is in the middle too but the light from the hotside warms it up a tad

Forgive me, but isn't it kind of pointless and a complete waste of electricity to use an incandescent or any other heat emitting bulb on a leo viv? FYI Walmart sells cheap 18 and 24 inch floro fixtures (with the bulb). Prices may vary from State to State, but typically these fixtures are in the 6-8 dollar range. Making it far more economical to use Floros vs heat emitting bulbs.

I don't mean to sound critical. But I constantly have to monitor my electricity use. The amount of cages and fish tanks I have already play a toll on my electric bill. Besides conservation is something EVERYONE on this planet needs to consider. I happen to take it seriously enough, that I'm even going to the extent of putting in green houses next summer, for my ever growing collection. I realize not every one has this option (climate mostly being the reason) but like I said we ALL need to consider conservation.

Just curious, Have you tried using a hide like what I've seen on many breeders sites. Where it's made out of a Tupperware type tub with the entrance hole cut out in the lid/top. Seems like this may discourage them from being able to remove the substrate from the hide...just some thoughts.

Mine is on the hot side, if it was on the cool side it wouldn't be all that humid, just wet on the bottom.

Hides do not need to be on the hot side. Evaporation takes place without additional heat. I increase the humidity in my cham cages by just misting. After a good misting The humidity often reaches 90% in my cool (as in cold) Montane enclosure. It would get higher, but this cage is almost the size of a small bathroom. So A/C + surface area = effects the efficiency to produce humidity in a larger enclosure.

Checking the humidity on a cool side hide....It's at 100% :main_thumbsup:

To answer the original poll, I keep mine on the cold side. I do this for reasons stated above and it does slow down the rate of evaporation, making the moss's moisture content last longer.

The warm side because in the wild it is under the warm sand and it is very humid. Every time they look like they are going to shed I replace it with there warm side hide.

Not if they are using it as a heat source..

I agree with this statement...
In addition, you do not want to have your leo wanting to go in the humid hide all the time so the less inviting it is, the better... Keeping it on the cool end will keep them from using it as a thermoregulartory spot... They will use it only during shedding and egg laying...

I put mine on the cool side. The reason for that is cause the heat from the heated side would cause the hide to dry up too fast and cause unwanted added humidity in the cage. Also Leos seem to go into the hide more often if its warm. I don't want them hanging out constantly in the humid hide. Its only there for breeding and shedding purposes.
