Halley I used to have a similar setup but it never panned out too well for me. I added crushed walnut shells to the bottom and stand the egg cartons up instead of leaving em flat, and it's seemed to work a lot better for me. Last time I had about 500 deaths and this time so far just a handful. The only difference is the tub and that I've added water crystals instead of carrots and I've added the moist box. The pain is becuase the egg cartons stand up, the crickets jump out when I open the lid for too long.

Maybe mine live, because I feed them off so quickly? I don't know. I don't know why it would be different.

Halley, I don't know, but I had tons of deaths housing my crickets like you do. I fed mine daily, still do with the substrate and up-turned egg cartons.

I don't know that is very strange. I know a lot of people that give a lot of room to feeders. But I have even kept 20,000 mealworms in a 15-qt Sterilite tub, and have 0 problems with them. I would probably keep up to 50,000 in one, if needed. I don’t know, maybe I’m lucky.

Do you have heat on the crickets? That is the only thing I can think of. I guess I also only clean the tub, like once in a “blue moon” Unless it gets really dirty, like it did earlier. Maybe you can stress crickets to death, just like anything else.

I clean every other day. This time I haven't had as many deaths, so I haven't needed to clean them as often. And usually, yes I do have a little heat on them. Otherwise they're in my reptile room, and don't really need a heat source. In general, I've had equal sucess and fails with and without heat.

The best thing has happened today :) I have tried for months to get my adults to start feeding on meal worms and never worked out. Now that there's a meal worms shortage I ordered 1K online and half were dead since they came from across the country in a very hot day I offered them some and they ate them all. Now I probably only have 100 left but it makes me happy that when the shortage is over I could move into meal worms.
