I dont even want to breed mealies, for one I dont even feed them, I do super worms. AND, soon I will have only 2 leos, & I still dont wanna breed them. I think its a waste, & I really dont have the time nor the patience for it...

How much patience does it take? :main_rolleyes:

I heard it takes 2 months before you start to see any new babies, but i dont think its a waste. When im paying $5 for 100 mealworms, thats a waste. Plus you dont even know what the mealworms were fed how they we treated. When you raise your own you have a quality guarantee and you know their going to be full of nutrition. How long have those mealworms been sitting in the fridge at the store for? Its alot cheaper to breed your own, and your ensuring your leopard gecko nutritios food.

I stated out breeding mealies after my 2nd gecko. Not time consuming at all and so easy. 5 dollars for 100 mealies is expensive tho..I have bought 500 for 6:50 at ***** and they are way better quality then the 100 count I could get down the road at the local petstore that charges the same price for 1/5th of what I get at *****. I started my colony with 1000 roughly and they are going great if not a bit slow bcause of the cool weather but will be feeder size soon and omg I have tons! lol good luck ..it is not stupid to raise them urself and extremely easy :)

I started to breed mealworms in april of this year. I started off with 100 but got 88 beetles. About 50 are still alive today and from all the hard work I've got about 3,000+ mealworms. So far the biggest are 3/4 of an inch. I plan to use some as feeders and then use the rest to start all over. I bought 4lbs of oatmeal and 2 boxes of wheat bran when I bought the mealworms and I haven't ran out yet. Ive put in maybe less then 20 dollars all together doing this. I have 6 geckos but only one eats mealworms. I bought 50 supers today with hopes of breeding them too.

From my experience, mealies will reproduce even if you don't intend them to. It's definitely easy and requires little effort aside from feeding them. Also, don't forget it takes gas to drive to the pet store, so your dad will save on that too.:main_yes:

Ok, i got 2 tubs for my beetles and mealworms, and 1 tub for the pupa. And i got some quaker oatmeal (rolled oats) 2 4.5 ilb bags for 10 bucks. Now i only have to get the mealworms and wait 2 months :p

Good luck.
There's a good chance you will actually feel a sense of pride when you discover that you intentionally created hundreds of squirming beetle larvae. :p

I buy supers, but for some reason, everywhere I get then from, none want to eat, so they die & dont pupate.
lve tried breeding, but they dont eat anything I try to feed them & they just die so I said hell with it.

I know what I'm talking about Chris, besides, from what you told me in chat the other night, you dont even own any leos.

Supers are harder than mealworms. They are 2 totally different things, so your vote in the poll shouldnt really count if you based it off supers.

Supers actually aren't all that different. I haven't had problems with them eating and the only reason they've died is because there wasn't enough moisture and they turned on themselves. Besides that I've had supers for over two months and have been able to get pupae and have started to get beetles. Hopefully soon I'll have some babies so I can speak about the breeding aspect. But I feed and treat my mealworms and supers the same. The only difference is that supers are more cannibalistic and usually won't pupate if they're with other worms they must be separated into their own space (cup, etc) until they turn into a beetle.

May I ask why your dad is against your breeding your own mealies? Other than him just thinking it's a waste? Does he have any valid reasons that we can maybe address for him?

Their own separate cup? that would be like thousands of cups!

Not so hard. I take 1oz cello cups with lids to seperate mine and stack them in a 6qrt tub and set them on the top of a rack in a warm spot. I check the cellos every few days and put the changed ones onto substrate when I find them. Soon enough you have lots of beatles and then little worms everywhere!! :)

He says, what if we get thouands of them what are we going to do with them? If i have extra i can get another leopard gecko, and my friend has a skink down the street i could sell to him. And my dad likes to go fishing at this little pond, so he could use that as fishing bait.

One other thing he said is if we through the mealworms over the fence, it will disrupt our community or something. And there would be beetles everywhere.

Throw mealies over the fence? What? Why the heck would you be putting any feeders outside?

If you have extra you just leave them in there. I think it's easier to breed mealworms for one or two geckos rather than more. With more you would need several tanks, complicated sifting and it just gets annoying. With one gecko a small ~1 gallon tub will save you a bunch on mealworms, though you may still have to buy some occasionally. It is almost no work to breed mealies. It just is a continuous colony. Even if you have to buy mealies 1/2 as often as you used to (likely more like 1/20 as often) that's a lot of money you save.
