Looking for info on Boxers

My friend and I were going back and forth over this last night. She bought what she calls a "full blooded all black boxer" from a breeder yesterday. I know my breeds well enough and black boxers don't exist last I checked. It looks more like a boxer/pit. She claims they are ultra rare and hard to find, that's why they are so expensive. She only paid $400 for her. She also claims the AKC is registering black boxers as brindle and her parents are full blooded black boxers with a European bloodline. That makes no sense and $400 is cheap for an "ultra rare" dog.

I checked the AKC site and the information dates back to 2005. I was looking for some more recent information to throw at her. She thinks this is a full blooded boxer and even my ex who is a vet tech and my mom who worked in a kennel with purebreds says it's a boxer/pit.

Here's something from 2007 http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/45 personally I don't trust anything besides the AKC website...the reason it dates back to 2005 is because the breed standards haven't changed since then. It clearly states in every article written, the breed standard is fawn or brindle...

You know what, though? IMHO, I would just let the poor girl think it's a "black boxer". If it makes her happy...ya know? Just my 2c :)

I know nothing about boxers, but I CAN tell you that $400 is WAY too cheap for something that is claimed to be very rare. For pure and tested bloodlines people pay thousands...I would be VERY skeptical. BUT, stranger things have happened.

She also claims the AKC is registering black boxers as brindle and her parents are full blooded black boxers with a European bloodline.

Here's the loophole for "backyard" breeders: Someone acquires 2 puppies from reputable breeder who sell the "non-show quality" pups with a contract saying that they must be spayed and neutered. This person then breeds these dogs who are not a perfect breed standard but are still registered with the AKC and sells the puppies to the next person who does the same thing. Eventually you have a really watered down gene pool, dogs who aren't even close to breed standard, potentially health threatening mutations (such as a solid white coat), and puppies who are still AKC registered. So while solid black is not recognized by the AKC the puppy could still have the paperwork sent in listing it as Brindle. It doesn't mean that it's accepted by the AKC it just means they don't know that the dog is solid black.
