So, I get to sleep around say 6 AM. Wake up to my alarm at noon. Get dressed and start sweeping my room (chinchillas, rats, and hamster tend to make a good mess). Now, although I believe I swept last night, sweeping again this morning around my chinchilla cage, I notice that one of my chinchillas passed away. My mother put him in a bag within a bag.

I called the vet that I have taken all my chinchillas too, they told me that I would have to take him to Auburn small animal hospital that they don't send animals off. So, she gave me the number, and I called. They told me because I haven't been in before they wouldn't help me and gave me the number to the state lab. And, of course being Saturday, no one answered. I then called the small animal vet back, and they told me what to do with the body.

I then called the emergency vet in town. They said they don't send animals because normally they aren't open with the lab is. But that there was NO reason as to why my vet wouldn't do it. She again told me to keep the body in a cooler with a blanket separating the body and ice to keep him cool. I was told to call the vets on Mondays. I'm calling the vet I take my dog to, in hopes they can help. If not I'm trying another vet in town that has an in house lab. If anything they should have the supplies to be able to send him off. If not, I'm calling the state lab, but I may not be able to get in because I don't live in Alabama. Not a problem. I'll use my boyfriend's address. Or, call UGA.

I don't understand why he died. Chinchillas live 10-15 years, so as to why Chong died at the age of 2.5-3 years. I would like to know why. I want to prevent whatever happened to him with my other chinchillas (Cheech and Chiko). I don't want my rats or hamster to get whatever he may have had or get into whatever he did.

I just want to know if he had some form of virus, germ, fungus, whatever... I fully am aware that chinchillas are very fragile, which is why for the past 3 years I have altered my cleaning habits and everything else. I no longer use cleaning sprays in my room, body sprays, anything with a strong odor. I've done everything right... From what I thought...

I spent my entire day scrubbing all three of my small animal cages with chlorox and vinegar. Rinsing them as many times as possible. I'm in so much pain. My back hurts more than normal. My bad knees did hurt; luckily not so much anymore. I'm even more tired with say only 6 hours of sleep. My room is still shattered. I have cages more in the middle of the room than normal. Fresh shavings everywhere. No bed to sit on where I have bits and pieces of everything. I cleaned everything except wood ledges, which I'm just replacing. I'm cleaning the mats in the rats and hamster cages tomorrow. I'm hoping that the carpet that I gave the chinchillas a week or so ago was not the cause. They did chew it some but as far as I could tell not too bad...

I just want answers...

So let's say it wasn't that great of a day...

That sucks. I hope you can find out what happened soon. Hopefully whatever it was, it was an isolated incident. Sorry for your loss.

i am very sorry for your loss. most vets offices to not do necropsy's and the animals must be sent of to a lab or university for a necropsy.

I am so sorry for your loss
It is so very frustrating to not know the cause and have to worry about your other animals because of what happened to Chong

I hope that everyone else is OK and that your good memories of Chong will get you through this sad time
