Magnetic rock

Hidey McG is destined for a larger cage very soon! I took Jake to the not-so-local reptile store today. Kind of like a field trip/zoo trip. They house all of their reptiles in the "proper" environment & encourage their customers to do the same. An hour and a half later--told you it was like a zoo trip--I came out of the store with one of the magnetic rocks that Hidey can crawl into, but the boys can check her out without super-disturbing her for 40% off! I'm guessing the sign was supposed to be down already because the owner seemed surprised. Anywhooo, wanted to share my good fortune. The mag rock is for Hidey's future cage. Figured I'd better put that in there before those that know she's currently residing in a 12x12x18 start throwing rocks at me! Bigger is soon to come!!! I promise!

Gotta ask the question though--Where's the best placement for one of these rocks cool end or hot end of the tank?

fortune

Good luck seems to be going around these days!

Maybe put it in the center. unless your taking a hot or cool hide out to fit it in.

I put my rock on the hot side because I have a gecko that is in there about 24/7. That's the only danger of having those rocks-- sometimes they don't want to come out. By the way, which pet store did you go to?

only thing to be careful of is make sure the magnets are attatched before letting go of the outside piece. i dropped mine and crackedit in multiple places. you can also put some moss in the top section and mist it to make it a humid hide.

I bought the medium. The large seemed HUGE. I've seen posts here where the small is too small for a full grown leo.

Alright thanks. I've never seen them outside of their box and had no clue what size they were in the pictures people posted. I gotta go price one now.

I bought one of these thinking it would be a great way for the kids to spy on our little guys without freaking them out too badly. Do you think my stinking leos want anything to do with it? Of course not!!! However, I still think it is a GREAT idea and with the way we are adding on to the family, maybe SOMEBODY will agree with me eventually ;)

Yeah, definately the hot end or middle. They are designed to be colder than the ambient temp in the tank. If your cool side is, lets say 75F, it may be just around 70For lower inside the rock and they may not use it.

I use those Rocks in most my tanks. Some gecko's love them, some wont go near them. Medium is a good size, and about 2-3 leo's will squeeze themselves in and drape over eachother happily. I also have one large one for my 40 gallon breeder tank. one boy and threee girls live in it all the time, occasionaly leaving for food and to go poop, but thats about it.

OK, I have a question about these now. Is the bottom flat? or does it attach to the inside of the tank? I'm guessing since many people use them, it isnt a problem, but from what I remember seeing, it seems as if the inside rock would fall over when you take off the outside rock, unless it is wedged into sand or something. I just can't picture it in my head.

The bottom is flat and they aren't "top heavy" in any way. You don't need to wedge it in substrate.

I just tested it. The bottom of the rock is flat. The rock halves are very light weight. The magnets are phenominally strong without the glass between them & can cause serious harm in the wrong hands. You do not have to struggle to release the outside half, nor does it slam shut against the glass risking a crack. The inside half does not move when separated. Hope this answers everything. (by the way, I'm going to check out a 20 gallon off of freecycle tomorrow :) )

Hey Scott, hidey's been in her 20 gallon for 2 days now...in the mag rock. She hasn't come out yet, so i sent in a cricket. I'm guessing that's a gecko's thumbs up on the new hide. I did put a clump of wet moss in in the upper chamber. She's looking mighty happy. Can't say the same for the cricket who visited though.

My hubbie opened up the front of our magnet hide yesterday for grins (since no one has ever used it) and to our surprise our little Blazing Blizzard Mo has decided this is a pretty nice hangout. She came out last night while I cleaned the tank, but was back in again this morning :D
