Try small super worms. Thats the direction I am headed until my meal worm colony starts to produce. Or the shortage ends.

The place I buy from have been out for a month too. I have had to go to Petco and pick up a couple 1000.

I tried superworms on my last cricket order but only 2 of my leos ate them and I threw most of them out.

Yup, everybody is out. You have to switch to another feeder. There is simply no other option, and I have realized there is no reason to fight it.

The reason for this is that the largest supplier in the U.S. (well at least in the top 5 as far as I know) had eggs not hatch. It is going to get worse, before it gets better though. As EVERYBODY is either out, or in short supplies, that is why you just have to give into alternative feeders.

we just got an order last week from sunshine of 5000 giant mealies. They are limiting customers to 5000 a week. Have you tried roaches or phoenix worms?

I would recomend dubia roaches because they dont' climb or fly. They dont' smell or make noise either. My geckos fill up on them much faster than crickets, and the small nymphs are small enough for even the newborn babies.

Best of luck.

There is a nation-wide shortage of mealworms. Something happened to the bedding/feed which caused mealworm mortality and eggs not to hatch. This is a MAJOR crisis, and will likely last the entire season.

We all need to consider alternative food sources immediately.

I would also like everyone to consider Superworms they don't just come in one size, I think that would be everyones best alternative.

I suggested this on another thread. It may be worthwhile to look into silkworms, especially buying silkworm eggs.

It not quite that easy. There can also be silk worm shortages as well. As there is now. There are small numbers available but large orders are hard to come by. Plus you don't wan't to make silk worms your primary feeder. It can be very hard to get animals to eat anything other than silks once they have a taste for them. They should be rotated into the diet with other feeders. Superworms are the way to go. They are much more lively than mealworms and come in various sizes, plus 4-6 large supers fill a med sized adult. Super are also way more hardy than mealworms. Much eaier to keep as well. I am also looking into Dubia as well, them seem to becoming very popular and look to be an excellent feeder as far as nutrition. As many other have stated before.

Good to know. I haven't dealt with silkworms in awhile because most of my geckos actually don't like them. I was thinking about them because of their nutritional value and the fact that you can order eggs and breed them yourself.

Oh god Silkworm eggs are harder to hatch then Leopard eggs IMO.
