Keep in mind that a one syllable name is MUCH MUCH easier for a dog to understand...it will take much longer to get him to learn his name if you use a name with more than one syllable. Cerberous is a good name...but I think it would be very very hard for him to learn it (even though dobies are very smart!). I don't particularly like the name leonidas...but you could shorten it to Leo....Spartan is only 2 syllables compared to the other names' 3 and thus would be a little easier for him. You can also make it easier by emphasizing the first syllable when teaching him his name.

Two syllable names are easier for dogs to differentiate between one syllable commands. But definitely shorter names tend to be easier for the dog to get used to.

It's not impossible for dogs to learn longer names, it just tends to take longer.

Paul, Pantera is a pretty name, but it flows better than some longer names I've heard of.

It's always taken me just a few days, or less, for my dogs to learn 2 syllable names.

May I suggest that you let the dog pick his name versus pick a "cool" name. Get to know the dog's personality a little better. I say that, but I've almost always had names picked out for my dogs before I 'learn' their personalities.

My neopolitan mastiff picked his name..... Pantera put him at ease while I was taking him home from the breeder. He was uncontrollably whining and making #2 in my truck from the stress. After trying everything, I hung my head out the window and played pantera vulgar display of power to atleast drown wish whining out. He went to sleep 2 minutes later:main_thumbsup:

That was his name on his FCI papers "pantera vulgar display of power":main_laugh:

I say name it whatever you want. Even if you named it something with 10 syllables, he'll learn it eventually. Our English Bulldog (not a breed known for their intelligence) has a huge vocabulary. We have a very long list of things that we can't say around him.

Deebo a cute name. It's pretty common in my area for APBTs. Ha. Which is ironic because they're also the most "deeboed" (spelling) dog.

Too funny. When we were training our rottie almost 9 years ago she figured out what we meant when we were spelling out "cookie". I have never underestimate her intelligence since.

:main_laugh: There are so many things we can't even spell (c-a-r r-i-d-e, d-i-n-n-e-r, b-r-e-a-k-f-a-s-t, t-r-e-a-t, w-a-l-k, etc) around our dogs! And they're Great Danes, which aren't known for their intelligence, either. ;)

Not only do they know their names, and things we spell, but they also know all of their nicknames, as well. I think your pup will be able to learn whatever you choose for a name.

ETA: Ha! I missed that you named him Deebo. That's cute!

I wasn't saying they can't learn anything....trust me I know how intelligent dogs can be! I was just saying a short name is easier. I'd rather not have it take weeks for my dog to learn its name when it could potentially learn it in one or two training sessions.

I woudn't say that danes aren't intelligent.....they just only learn what they want to! lol

Deebo's a good name :)

Chris, I don't know how I missed this thred the first time around! He is absolutely ADORABLE!!! (BTW, even though both my dogs have 1 syllable names, I still call them 'Brat" or "Butt-puppy" or "Stinker" and they still respond!)

He's pure Dobie? From the look of those paws he'll be a big'n. I like the name you chose, or Magnum (becauase of Zues and Apollo from Magnum P.I.). Does anyone remember the movie, "The Doberman Gang?"

I just saw the last pics. He's gotten very big! Deebo fits him. He looks like he loves camera time.
