GAH I hate it when stores do that kind of thing. I think some reptiles can handle sand, but I would avoid it at all costs. We used paper towels at first for my guy but then I read about the reptile carpet, but I'm beginning to think switching to tiles may be better. I'm going to give the basic info to some people at Lowes and see about getting some tile slates for the tank. I've heard that it's good to have the extra light because they like to bask in the "sunlight" so to speak occasionally and my guy does at night with the red bulb. It provides extra heat which is good for them unless it gets too hot, that's what you have to be careful about, depending on where you live. And I believe it says on the directions for most UTHs to leave it on 24/7, because that's how the gecko gets its warmth. Some leos are more active than others, mine gets active a little bit at night from what I can tell, I don't know about when I am asleep, but during the day, he's snoozing as they usually do during the day ^_^
