Hi. I'm new here, and I'm learning about these guys. My husband has owned these leos since December 2001.
They're a little thinner right now than we'd like, so we're fattening them up some. Just a little, though, my husband is real particular about the care of these guys, and he doesn't want them to get too big.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share. They are not my best shots, but they're what I could get for tonight. Oh, we have 3 females and 1 male.
Man, they need baths.

Lovely pictures! I love the one looking directly into the camera! Before anyone else goes and says it...talk to your husband about the sand...does he insist on using it? It's one of the most debated topics on this forum, so if you need more info, there's plenty lol. A lot of people use paper towels, repti carpet, or tile as substrate...otherwise, cute photos and they look like ravenous eaters!

Thanks!
Yeah...I just caught a three page picture thread where a ton of users here were jumping on a guy for using sand.

He's used the sand for 8 years, his geckos have been extremely happy, they are provided calcium, and I don't think he'll take the sand out and use another substrate.

I know. It sucks. If they were solely MINE, I'd use the paper towels.
But, "my" animal is my dog. He doesn't get on me about the kibble I feed her, or the raw beef and deer heart I feed her, or her training, or anything else I do for her, so I'm not sure how much I should bother him about the use of the sand.

But thank you for being kind and gentle about your warning about the use of sand. I do appreciate it.:D

Very nice normals you have there. Are you guys breeding them at all or all of them girls? I would feed them all they want of mealies, is it good for them to be nice and plump. yes sand is a very debated thing here. I would try to get more food into them they are not that thin but normally they are larger than that some times. Great geckos i love the good o normal they have character to them.

Well, yes. That is great.:D

I don't mean for it to sound so "That's your animal, and this is my animal" with us.
It's just, he had the geckos before we got together, and then I was the one interested in getting a dog. He still does things for the dog, and I will be doing things for the geckos. But I am the one really interested in the dog and have done all the research on care and training. He's the one that has done all the research on the care of the geckos.
I am not "qualified" enough yet to tell him how to care for his geckos.
When I no longer have to turn to him and ask basic questions about the basic care of the geckos, I might have a little more room to say, "Hey, why don't we just try paper towels?"

I mean, if he tried coming to me and saying,"Hey, why don't we feed Ella (the dog) Kibbles N Bits?"
I'd think he was insane, and he definitely does NOT have the research in dog nutrition that I have. I wouldn't take that food switch advice, and I'd tell him, "Yeah...you know, I don't think I'm going to be feeding Ella Kibbles N Bits."

Does that make sense? I can sometimes over explain things and become confusing.

yeah. i get that. maybe you should show him some good caresheets on the geckos. we have dogs too which i had dogs before we got together and geckos and many other animals. my animal knowledge outweighs his. but decisions are made together most of the time. i would definitely get more worms in them though. the sand well they been on it for 8 years i dont think it will kill them now lol. Are the females laying eggs at all? one of them looks like a normal i had a while back. i miss her.

No. They are not laying eggs. They are 8 years old. Don't they usually go through, like, some type of lizard menopause at that age?

Ew. See, my ignorance shines right on through! Lizard menopause!:main_laugh:
They will be getting mealies daily. They ate all the mealies put in their dish tonight (I think we gave them 3-4 per gecko), but they still have crickets bouncing around in their cage.

Very cute Leos! I love how expressive they are!
Great photos.

As far as the sand goes, we don't TRY to sound rude or hurtful to those who use sand. We're simply concerned, and we care about the species. So we come off a bit....I dunno...blunt?
But....we really do care about the animals. We simply want them healthy and happy.
At least with me. <8]

Oh, I totally understand, believe me. I feel the same way whenever someone shows up on the pit bull forum I go to boasting about how fun their pit bull had at the dog park, or how they have two males together that they don't separate when they leave the house, or when they have two unaltered pit bulls of opposite sex that they keep together when the female is in heat.
Or when they claim a "red nose" is a separate breed of pit bull and not just a nose color. Or when someone tells me that my pit bull is skinny and asks me if I ever feed her only because they seem to think that my pit bull should look like a lab and NOT have a tucked tummy. When, in fact, pit bulls are supposed to have tucked tummies, and they are supposed to be muscular and lean.

I understand passion about the animal, hobby, human, field of work, or whatever it is. I understand.
And I'd like to thank you all for being understanding that I don't have much say right now as to whether or not he uses sand or paper towels.
Seriously. Because you all could have been really rude to me, and you weren't.:D

have they ever bred? i kinda figured they were not laying but you know sometimes geckos are weird. i would keep mealies in there all the time. mealies aren't that big i know mine could eat easily 10 a day probably. i am going to start keeping them in their cage as all times. i am feeding superworms and crickets now and going to introduce roaches next week.i am guessing they are not wanting crickets. lol unless they are not in the mood for crickets.lol. my oldest girls at the moment are 4ish. and my first leo is 10 and is at my moms house lol.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
They're going to get baths tomorrow, so hopefully I can remember to bring my camera downstairs and get pictures of them after their baths, when they are out of their cage.:D

No, he's never bred them. In fact, up until a year ago, he kept his male separated from the females, in a different cage.
He decided too late that he was going to try and breed. It never happened.

He's fed super worms, and for a very brief time we were feeding lobster roaches (oh man did they LOVE those things!), but I had issues with that.
See, I have an EXTREME fear of anything with an exoskeleton, and I was having nightmares about roaches when he was keeping them in the house.
They were a pain to keep alive, too.
When it comes to the bugs that are fed, I won't feed those. I'll feed the worms, but not the bugs.
Nope. I cannot do it. Bugs make me panic. Badly.:D

See! I'm working very carefully on getting my husband to "let me in" on the gecko care.
I am the one that takes on ALL the dog care as far as what kind of food we feed her, exercising her, training her. I mean, he does do things for her, if I ask, but things with my dog are done MY way.
It's just how it is, I guess.:D

yeah. i dont know how i am going to be with the whole roach thing either i dont like crickets for sure though i feed them out to them. i am not crazy about the worms of any sorts but i feed them out.... i have beagles and they get their exercise outside in the yard they play very rough eachother, they eat whatever is fed to them its not crap though, they are hounds and you can't do much with training with a hound unless you want to hunt and my beagles ain't hunting dogs. they have minds of their own they for sure aint labs or goldens where they care to please you lol they please themselves and if they want something they figure out a way of getting it they are not dumb they are not obedience dogs nor do i want them to be i want them to be dogs thats what they are dogs they know when they did wrong they have rules but they are like my kids. i like things to be done how they need to be done, i am like that when it comes to us going on vacation things are normally not done to my specifications persay because i have my ways of doing things though i make it easy for them i make the crestie food in advance and the only insects to be fed is to the leos and the dogs well they are simple give food and water and bring them in at night because 4 beagles in one room of a house you will not have walls left if left unattended lol and bring them in when they are barking or if its raining. lol hope the leos fatten up soon though they are older they will slim down sometimes i know my mom said the first one i ever had isn't eating well i gave her some appetite stimulat and she tried crickets too my next suggestion if hes still not eating is mealworms. well i hope you guys work together to take care of your animals two heads are better than one lol
