i have never heard of it myself. If you really want an enigma why dont you try a breeder? Even if one doesnt live close to you most send their geckos through the mail. Youd at least know youre getting a healthy one, raised by someone who cares.

Right, many of the pet store animals looked like they were on death's door and I doubt you'd be lucky enough to find an enigma there anyway. It would be better to find a reputable breeder because that way you're not supporting people who think it's okay to sell sick geckos.

Haha, that's awesome. At the local chain store I've only seen normals. There was a BB at another local chain, but the poor thing really wasn't going to make it to the end of the week...

We have a small local pet store and she has a couple breeders that she "special" orders geckos from. She doesn't keep any reptiles in the store. She just gets them in for people.

This is like the sand debate. People are going to buy their reptiles at chain stores no matter what

With that said...I've only seen normals and tremper albinos at the stores near me

Well i think i got lucky with the little guy i found. Mack snow enigma.

I think the luck here is in the eye of the beholder. Think about this logically- Yes you got a very kool leo at im sure a good price. But paul is right you got what you pay for. Meaning when you reproduce those leos do you think there will be none in the petstores?? Basically my point is that is where the market went, it sux that you can get these things in a mom and pop shop, but it is what it is and the value (unfortunetly) fell.

Sorry about my rant, but paul it right you get what you paid for. By not supporting private breeders, these things were able to go to pet stores because some individuals felt they had to "dump" them. And i dont just mean you I mean as a whole a privately bred animals is Sooooo much more healthy and quality stricken then a chain petstore animal (in most cases). Sad

Even if you did get one from a pet store you would have no Idea what genes you had as most pet stores have no idea, cause they are not experts on leos just sales men, they deal with all sortsof animals and sell quanity not quality, for the most part. When you buy from most private breeders you get beutiful animals that have been well taken care of and the knowledge of the genes your animal carries which will save you time in the long run, most pet store just sell say an albino as an albino they have no Idea of the three strains and usually they will tell you anything you want to hear to sell the animal I've also noticed a percentage of pet store animals that are higher end stuff were dropped off there and usually have a problem, either with a deformity of some sort or are way older than you think because they have know idea the ages of there animals and they sometimes are retired breeders that people do not want to feed any more since they are not produceing, also may be infertile or they may even have dideases. Theres nothing against pet stores they are all about makeing money, but I would never buy any gecko from a pet store period I have no respect for the big chained stores any way as there animals are shipped out and put on sale right out of the egg, and they dont have a chance to get established so they are prone to problems, as well as in most cases I've seen they usually put 20 geckos in 5 gallon tanks and they are missing tails and very sick looking and skinny housed on sand, and I personally refuse to support that kind of cruelty. I will buy supplies but not there reptiles plus I will definatly sell any of my animals to pet stores as they usually do not properly care for them and they are to important to me, when quanity and greed take the place of the animals over all well being then thats where I draw the line, so in my opinion you would be way better off spending the extra money and buying from a private breeder, or like was said earlier you get what you pay for and you can pretty much be sure you'll be getting something that will not even hold a candle to prvately bred animal, and you may be getting into something that soemone sold to them knowing there is something wrong with it. And then you bought it un knowingly and then you have the chance of haveing a defected animal, may make a good pet but more than likely will not be a good breeder for you in most cases as pet stores that get higher end morphs usually not always but usually are given the animals at a discount or free just to unload them, so you really run alot of risks with this kind of purchase unless its for a pet only other wise you can't be sure what genes you are breeding into you animals, to much risk invovled, hope this helps

Well the pet store that i know of that has enigmas, he also breeds his own but the enigmas he has he got from somewhere else and this is not a chain store it is a local i guess you could call it a mom and pop and for the most part does a very good job on housing and takin care of there reptiles including there leo's. The owner has a few of his own along with bearded dragons and a few snakes.

i understand heather and paul and ryan..
but when i go into a pet store i dont want those few to suffer.
why let them suffer when you could save them?
i know they just bring in more...
i just cant stand it to see them in pain!!
especially since they havent done anything to deserve it..
i dont think its right to buy from petstores but on the other hand they are just going to get in more when their sickly ones die.
i personally think its a lose-lose situation
:(

I have walked into many petstores and saw geckos suffering. When you buy geckos from pet stores and think that you are "saving" them what your really doing is putting money back into the pet store so that way they can get another batch of geckos for some other sucker to save.

People don't save geckos from pet stores. They just give them money for something that you could easily give money to any breeder on here and you wouldn't be saving them. You would be getting a healthy gecko that you know doesn't have any diseases or parasites and such.

I would rather watch geckos die in a pet store then in peoples homes.

If you look at it from a business stand point, it's not all lose/lose. Customers buy these geckos from the pet shop, the pet shop makes their money and buys more from the breeder mass producing them, the breeder makes his money. All win/win when you don't consider yourself or the animal.

When buying a gecko from a pet store you're doing simply that, buying it not "saving it". By "saving" that one gecko we become part of the cycle. Not participating in the cycle is the only thing that will break it.

If you do not buy the gecko then perhaps the pet store owner will not take care of it and it will die. Maybe if a few of them die he will either a) feel bad about it and take better care of them, or b) stop wasting his money on buying Leos that do not sell because his educated customers to not want to help support the cycle.

Bottom line, if there weren't lots of people out there "rescuing" geckos from pet shops with improper husbandry then there would be no demand for a few breeders to mass produce them.

[end rant ;)]

Ariana...you are talking to someone that used to "rescue" geckos on a weekly basis...trust me, ask anyone here! They broke my heart again and again when they were just too far beyond repair. I finally had to tell myself no more...I wasn't helping ANYONE in the situation - not the geckos, not myself, not the store. Not only that, I was endangering the rest of my animals by having VERY sick little ones around. The last little guy was my final straw. At that point, I realized I was going about it the wrong way. Instead of BUYING those animals I made some phone calls, and had the local pet chain checked out by the authorities under accusations of animal neglect and abuse - they literally had dead geckos in the tanks. They have since changed, and we will see how long that lasts!
