I thought it would be nice to hear some expert opinions about these two.

ciruelars2.jpg

First, this is Ciruela. She became one year old some days ago, and as you can see she is quite healthy, but she is only 43 grams! She was 45, but stopped eating because of ovulation and has lost two grams since then. I guess she's just small, but I'm a bit puzzled by this because all the geckos I have had until now (but the girl I'm showing below that has obvious issues) were quite big (60+) by the time they reached one year. I don't think she's going to grow anymore. I wanted her to reach at least 50g before breeding her but I think that might be obese in her case... Do you think breeding would be risky for this girl? Does she look to you like she's going to grow eventually?

This other sweetie is Koi. She has the enigma disorder which makes it somewhat difficult to feed her and that's why she's a bit slim. She recently spent a good deal of time refusing to eat, until I discovered she would eat much better if she had some exercise before the meal. I'm a little scared about her having nutritional deficiences because of that. Sometimes I *think* I see something that resembles the "double elbow/knee" of animals with MBD; or she twistes her legs in a weird manner (see the second pic). I can tell MBD when it's really obvious but not when it's only incipient. Would you say she may be having MBD or I'm just paranoid?

Thanks for looking.

Personally, I think there are exceptions to the 50g+ rule and Ciruela is one. Some geckos are just on the small side, if she were a lot heavier she might have problems laying because of obesity. She's just a petite gal!

As for the Enigma, maybe you are thinking you're seeing MBD because she's twisting and moving differently than most geckos. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to giver her extra calcium though.

I may try to breed Ciruela this weekend then. If I let time pass by the only thing that will happen is that she'll continue ovulating and not eating. She's quite nervous lately and I think she's looking for a male. Although I'm not too eager to try breeding for the first time with a small girl like this... Wish me good luck!

Geckos sometimes creep me out with the way they twist their legs and feet. Koi just takes it to the extreme. I'm giving her calcium with all her meals just in case...

We too had a girl that didn't seem to be growing and stopped near 45 grams. We made the exception for her to breed because we just didn't think she was going to get any bigger. She laid one infertile clutch and ate and gained the weight back pretty well.

Just recently, she laid her second clutch, which looks fertile and good thus far! She didn't eat any worms the first night, but by the second, she ate 6 giant mealworms, and 6 more today :) She looks like she is gaining the weight back again. She was, however, close to 35 grams at one point - but since she does eat and gain the weight back, we did our best not to worry too much about it. We monitor how much she eats and take her weight every so often to make sure that she is doing okay. She is very active and everytime that she sees one of our faces, she comes right out to say hi :)

I wish you the best of luck with your small girl, let us know how things go and keep us updated!!

In the end I bred Ciruela to Lavi (my MSB male) yesterday. I thought it would be better than doing it on the weekend just in case something that required veterinarian attention happened (a prolapse, a fight... always thinking of the worst scenario). But everything went smooth. They even let us do a home-made gecko porn video :p I'm thrilled to get my first gecko eggs soon! (and hopefully some SSBs babies this year, it would be crazy that my first harchling was one!).

But apart from thrilled, I feel weird. I've wanted to breed geckos for a long time, but... This is the first time I made something not to benefit them, but just me. I feel like they have turned from "pets" into "breeders", and although I will continue to care and love them the same, it feels like something has changed.

Come on, I'm more concerned about their "first time" than I was about mine, lol!!!

On the other hand Koi has started not eating again... Grrr :main_angry:

Today Ciruela layed her first clutch, yay! I was worried because she was being a little bit late but here they are!

Probably infertile but I couldn't be happier. I'm very proud of her, she managed very well. Here's her after laying (I couldn't take a better pic because she was nervious and I didn't want to stress her anymore, but it's enough to see that she isn't in bad shape).

Rave: Ciruela has layed her second clutch and she's doing very well! She hasn't had a problem with laying, hasn't lost any weight and is eating like a pig. I'm very glad I decided to breed her.

All the four eggs look infertile if you candle them, but I can't bring myself to throw them away. They look and smell good, so I guess there's still hope. I wonder if I'm candling them the wrong way, because they all look yellowish and empty to me, but I think the first clutch should have gone bad by now.

Rant: Yesterday I found that Koi had layed a clutch as well. Of course, I never put her together with a male, not even during cleaning, so she just layed an infertile clutch on her own. The eggs were small and flimsy, and she was so weak afterwards that her limbs shook when she tried to stand.

I know it's not her fault, but it is almost insulting that she wastes my efforts to keep her healthy just like that. Ugh, I feel so angry right now. At least she ate readily after that and I could shove some calcium into her body without stressing her.

I wonder if there could be some link between Ciruela's pregnancy and Koi's sudden clutch. Their tanks are one next to another and this species is so sensitive to chemical signals.
