Well, my little girl is going in at noon tomorrow to have her foot amputated.

Long story (kinda) short:

She had a really bad shed a few weeks ago, which caused her to chew off the ends of her own toes. She had gotten an infection and the antibiotics seemed to be working. Then she quit cooperating with the antibiotics and got really upset and tried to asperate herself even after a couple of drops and started blowing bubbles out of her nose! Of course I was terrified and took her back to the vet. He said her foot looked a lot better and not to risk asperating her and continue the sterile saline soaks 2-3 xs a day and Neosporin. Well, she just shed today and it looks terrible. She didn't want to eat last night (I thought mostly because of the shed), but she is also lethargic today, so I know the infection is back and spreading. So......she went in today and our wonderful vet is sacrficing his lunch hour to fit her in for surgery tomorrow. Please keep her in your thoughts. I am a nervous wreck! Hopefully the 8th vet visit for this problem will do the trick! :main_yes: She's such a little stinker, but I love her dearly!

I will keep you guys in my thoughts! Poor gecko! And I hope it all goes well. You are lucky to have a vet who cares enough to give up his lunch hour for a surgery. *fingers crossed*

Thank you so much, everyone, for all of your support! This is the first 'leo surgery' that I have to deal with and I'm so anxious! I just hope my poor little girl will finally get the relief she deserves! I can't express how much I appreciate everyone here!

Thank you for the kind words, Debbie. I can't tell you enough times how sorry I am that this happened to the beautiful little girl that you entrusted me with! :(

eta: yes, I am sooo thankful I have such a caring vet. Aurora is looking septic today so everyone is pitching in to get her the help she needs as quickly as possible! Even the Hospital Director, who has a degree in zoology and has a leo at home, is coming in on her day off to assist and help with the after care. I am truly blessed with the wonderful group of people at my Vet's!

Well, we are home! The surgery went very well and she is resting quietly back in her little habitat. She is still a bit groggy, but doing quite well. *big sigh of relief* :)

Doc ended up removing most of the foot and thinks that will be enough to have gotten rid of the infection. There is enough left that she will still be able to walk on it. He gave her a Baytril injection and I will try a few drops at a time of the oral antibiotics in the morning and see if she takes it ok, but if she continues to be bratty about it, he will give her another injection tomorrow when she goes back in to have het little 'stump' checked.

I really want to thank everyone, again, for all of the support. I hardly slept last night and everyone's kind words really helped me get through the night and day!

I will keep you posted on her progress and probably take some pics after she's rested a bit.

Glad to hear she made it through the surgery!! And you too!! :D

I was given an oral antibiotic in liquid chicken flavored suspension for one of my geckos. It sounds like you've got the red Baytril liquid though. My gecko does not want to cooperate, so I have to kinda gently force her mouth open with the plastic syringe. Usually it takes several tries before I can administer the liquid without her freeing herself of the syringe.

So I'm just saying, don't expect the gecko to easily accept the oral antibiotic. But it's probably best if she receives it every day, for 2 weeks or so. Also cage and air cleanliness will be critical, but I'm sure you know that already. Best of luck with her healing!!

I am glad that the surgery went well and that she is on the road to recovery
I will keep you both in my prayers

If a small syringe is still too large for her mouth try and find a plastic eye dropper-it has a much smaller end to work

It has to be plastic because they can bite down on the glass ones and actually break them in their mouth

I am glad that Aurora is doing well after surgery. I hope she has a speedy recovery!

I have never had to give my leos antibiotic before, but I did have to give Panacur once (pinworms, darn crickets!). I went to the local pharamacy (CVS or Walgreens) and asked the pharmacist for the 1ml oral syringe. They gave me a bunch for free because they said no one ever asks for them! Anyway, it worked well for my leos. :)
