I'd asked my boyfriend to soak Basil so we could get the residual shed off his toes. He ran the water way too hot and I didn't notice (I was in the other room) until he called me in there and said there was a problem. He had a minor prolapse and his back legs stiffened up. You know what a person who's had a stroke looks like--with that curled hand? Well now that's what his left leg is doing. Right now I'm soaking him in the proper temperature of water, with sugar, to take care of his prolapse, but it doesn't look like his legs are returning to normal.

Is it safe to assume the hot water just shocked his system and he'll return to normal eventually or is this a sign of a much larger problem?

I don't know if it is a sign of something bigger, but I also don't think that the shock alone would cause his leg/foot to do that. If it doesn't return to normal within a hour or so I would try contacting a Vet, or if your lucky someone on here may know more. How hot was the water? Maybe pics can help too...I hope he gets better.

There's a pic of the foot. The other one seems to be working fine, but this one hasnt gone back to normal. The water felt hot to ME. So I'm guessing it was clear over 100*

I think he might be okay now..it looks like the left leg fixed itself. I'd still like to know what caused this, though, so if anyone has any thoughts/opinions on the matter please let me know.

I'm going to keep an eye on him for a while to make sure he's okay :/

I know overheating can cause permanent neurological damage in snakes, I imagine it could in lizards too. It's a good sign that he has improved though.

I'd be inclined to go with this as well...i'd imagine his CNS was just shocked to high heavens when he was put in the hot water...especially if he had been laying on the cool side for a while, or if the air in your house was cool...the shock of going from one extreme to the other probably just sent him over the edge. Thank goodness it fixed itself.
