It basically means that living a cowardly life isn't much of a way of living at all and will cause suffering and failure throughout one's life, and to be brave in all that you do so that you can die with honor when the time comes.

My interpretation of the line would mean a coward runs away, so in battle leaving thousands of soldiers to die, where as a valiant soldier will stand firm and experience a "glorious death".

When my Fiancee and I were driving to my place we were talking about the snow and where she lives they are complaining about so much snow, that she came up with this quote. It sort of is an inside joke, because her family has 2" of snow where as we have 4ft.
