Racks or tanks

I am sort of a newbie to leopard geckos. I was just wondering what people recommended for keeping geckos. I would like to go to a rack system to save space but do they do well for viewing the gecko's at least decently and do the gecko's seem to enjoy them or should I stick to tanks and figure something out with them?

In my opinion tanks are great if you only have 2-3 animals, but if you get more the tank size has to increase and its harder for you to know exactly who has eaten and who hasn´t.

I favour racks - any day.
The take up less space (depends on setup) and you can monitor the individual much better.

Thank you for the reply, I think I will switch to racks. I do agree with not knowing who is or who isn't eating. I have 2 babies in a 20L and another 2 in anther 20L I never know for sure who is eating or not seeing as they wont eat with me around yet. So far including my AFT's I have 8 geckos. The tanks take up so much space it isn't even funny. I'm getting rid of my other tanks too and building a wooden enclosure that has 4 cages for my bearded dragon and 3 blue tongue skinks.

Do your geckos seem happier in the racks or about the same? I heard some people say they like racks better b/c of the privacy.

They seem more calm and less stressed - and further more, I can control100% in what condition their pooh is and if someone seems ill or stressed i know with 100% accuracy who it is:)

I had problems when I had them together in a 20g breeder. I saw blood on the papertowl and couldnt pin-point whos it was. I am now super happy with my rack!

Racks are the way to go. We have 12 leos hatchlings to adults in about a 4ft by 4ft space. Really nice and easy to clean feed and water. Just pull a tub and do what you need to . If it needs a good cleaning have an extra tub and swap it out.

I agree, I had tanks initially, but it took forever to clean them, and the leos seemed more stressed. The racks are really handy dandy, easier to clean, take up less space, and the leos seem to like them better. Just my 2 cents. ;)

I think it really depends, if you have only a few geckos tanks are probly your best choice. If you breed/keep alot of geckos or both lol, racks are great and really a must.

I have 10 leos, and one on the way. I have 6 tanks. 2 in 20L another 2 in a 20L, 3 in a 30L, and 3 each in their own 10s. I have tanks everywhere. Because I also have 2 ball pythons and an african fat tailed gecko. And I want to build a rack. Just a mater of money and showing my dad how to do.

I've been using tanks so far and just bought my first rack, so the jury's still out. I've really liked the tanks, though. Right now I have 11 adult leopard geckos in a total of 5 20L tanks. In addition I have two 20L tanks divided into 3 sections, each housing 2 hatchlings and another 20L which is empty but will also be divided. I have a smaller tank divided into 2 sections housing 3 hatchlings. This doesn't count another tank with 2 banded geckos and 3 planted tanks with day geckos and a crestie.

I like how the tanks display my animals and how they come out to check me out. Some of them love to climb which they wouldn't be able to do in a rack. I agree with what I've heard about many geckos being happy in racks, the control you can have when housed individually and the privacy they get, but it still bothers me to have these gorgeous animals shut up in drawers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that geckos shouldn't be in racks, and I will probably have my rack populated before the end of breeding season, it's just not my personal preference at this point.

Actually, I prefer glass vivariums to racks. I've built custom racks in the past as well as had regular tanks. I keep a large collection and although it isn't cheap to do so, I enjoy the aesthetic appeal of having all custom glass vivariums, not to mention they are designed specifically for the species that's being housed in them...
