Re-naming the roach, suggestions for Dubia aliases

So dang it, I'm gonna start a Dubia colony, but I need to get my story straight before I bring 'em in the house. My wife dislikes roaches more than any other thing on Earth, so they NEED to not be "roaches", but something else. So I want to tap the seemingly limitless depths of creativity of Geckoforums.net by asking what your best undercover dubia callsign is. It has to be believable, and preferrably make sense with how they look... in their non-roach-like attributes.

Gimme your best suggestions, and I will post the winner after the thread dies down. Then, when the new residents move in, I'll let you know how it worked. I might even put a prize on this one, just to make it interesting. :main_thumbsup:

my wife is the same way, but luckily the temps in my garage right now are perfect at around 90 degrees so they are in tubs out there. i called them dubia beetles when i ordered them, or "fat dubs". but that all went out the window when she saw one of the adult males. you can't convince her that they aren't roaches, specially since she googled dubia beetles. i got busted, but she's understanding now and since im converting my garage into a herp/gameroom, she won't ever have to worry about them being in the house. as for names you can use, im partial to fat dubs because if she searches the interwebz all she will find is chrome rims...

JUST USE THE SCIENTIFIC NAME

Ya Sorry nothing creative here just use their scientific name thats what I do.

What cha got there? Dubia

if she asks what a dubia is just tell her. I wouldn't lie to her. have an adult conversation and tell her what they are and explain they are not your common pest roach and its extremely hard for them to survive out side of their artificial environment let alone breed and infest a house and that they wont escape and are the best food for your critters.

I'm just trying to avoid having to mention the word "roach", because, let's face it, they are not the same thing as what's running behind the kitchen cabinets of America. I will probably just call them Dubia, but I thought it would be more fun to think up interesting names for them instead.

I would just be honest with her. The best thing to do would be to tell her all the pros about keeping the roaches. How much easier they are to keep, breed & maintain. That you'll save money by breeding these animals & that they cannot climb or fly. that they don't reek, like crickets. That they won't/can't infest the house because it isn't a suitable environment for them. Tell her, "You want to save money don't you?"

I used that line to get my bf to agree on getting roaches.

Sorry guys and gals, I guess humor isn't as obvious in print as in person. If I really wanted advice on whether or not to lie to my wife, I would have posted this in the ethics section. I appreciate the concern, I really do, but I thought it would be fun to hear all the creative names you could come up with. I apologize for my miscommunication, but I don't think I could really look her in the face and tell her they're not roaches anyway.

*Total seriousness now* When I get my dubia, I will put them in their living quarters, and they will stay there. I will not mention this to my wife, she doesn't need to know this, since the word "roach" will end any logical discussion before it begins. She doesn't look in my bins anyway, and I plan to have my herp room up and running before winter anyway.

So... if you have any colorful suggestions, send 'em on. If not, I'll let this thread die and file it with the rest of the "Kevin's bad thread ideas".

Didn't mean to rain on your parade....but the roaches aren't all that bad. I HATE roaches & I was the one that decided it would be best to get them. I got lateralis, but i wanted to get dubias. i think dubias are a whole lot easier to look at. To me they don't look like the nasty wild roach.

To me they look kinda like giant pill bugs.

You could call them Tropical rolly pollies...of course...only let her look at the females, since the males are a dead give away.

No worries, I'm sorry I came across so wrong. I re-read my original post, and understand how folks would think I was serious...

yeah, the male dubia is something I will try to make sure she never sees, since they actually look like roaches.

Where are you getting them from? They are pretty pricey. I am planning on attending the reptile show in san antonio this september to see if there is anyone selling them there. maybe they'd be cheaper w/o shipping.

Kevin just tell her they are south american rollie pollies. thats what i told my wife and ya it works while they are small or even for the females just don't let her see the adult males.:main_evilgrin: i think she will agree with you on that they look like regular rollie pollies but just get bigger cuz they are a foreign species. see if that works for you.:main_laugh: in light of things if that eventully falls just let her know all about them. how they can't crawl up smooth surfaces, live in our climate and reproduce without there controlled enviroment etc.etc.....by then you already have them and its much easier to ask for forgiveness then to beg for permission.:main_thumbsup:
