Where are you getting them from? They are pretty pricey. I am planning on attending the reptile show in san antonio this september to see if there is anyone selling them there. maybe they'd be cheaper w/o shipping.

One of the members here has some extras I might order from him. Or, a local herp shop near here is about to make an order, so I might go in with them for some. I'm not really in a hurry, so I haven't made a decision yet.

"Six legged money savings that multiple" or SLMSTM for short.

How about just focus on the ECONOMICAL values?

Use an excel spreadsheet to determine all future potential savings and bring a jewelry catalog. Then together calculate the time frame needed to save on feeder costs until your wife can pick out her new jewelry =)

That's just beautiful, Jon. Just the kind of humorous, yet surprisingly practical advice that I'm looking for. Dubia = moneysavings = jewelry. Can't go wrong with that.

Just keep crickets in the house and after a couple of weeks of constant chirping at night she won't care what you keep. That's what worked for me.

Sorry guys and gals, I guess humor isn't as obvious in print as in person. If I really wanted advice on whether or not to lie to my wife, I would have posted this in the ethics section. I appreciate the concern, I really do, but I thought it would be fun to hear all the creative names you could come up with. I apologize for my miscommunication, but I don't think I could really look her in the face and tell her they're not roaches anyway.

*Total seriousness now* When I get my dubia, I will put them in their living quarters, and they will stay there. I will not mention this to my wife, she doesn't need to know this, since the word "roach" will end any logical discussion before it begins. She doesn't look in my bins anyway, and I plan to have my herp room up and running before winter anyway.

So... if you have any colorful suggestions, send 'em on. If not, I'll let this thread die and file it with the rest of the "Kevin's bad thread ideas".

What I think went wrong is that this isn't really like other forums. This one has people who are mature and caring. The problem with that is they don't recognize the opportunity to troll the thread with funny names for your "Dubia's". Instead they understood the best thing to do and talk to your wife.

In Florida we have the palmetto bug. It's a commonly accepted term for a roach big enough to put a leash on. Not at all the same thing as a house roach. A Dubia kinda reminds me of a river beetle :)

HHAHAHA Robin, you crack me up! Trust me, you would NOT want to be my assistant. My schedule, work and life is just too crazy at times. Sure, I get to do many fun things and meet famous people, but it's really stressful too! (I tried to talk Tom Cruise into owning a reptile the other week, he just laughed. true story!)

First time I brought mine into the house:

Mother: "What ARE those things?"
Me: "Non-climbing, non-flying, large non-chirping healthy beetles."
Mother: "Did you say non-chirping? Because I like that."

To the OP, I found humor in this..and I honestly didn't think you were serious AND I most definitely can relate to your wife. I am completely and utterly terrified of roaches...if I see one loose in the house, I FREAK OUT. My heart rate increases, I sweat, I start to itch LOL it's crazy. Anyway for some reason they don't scare me if I know they can't get out of what they are enclosed in. when I met my husband he had a rather large colony of hissing cockroaches...which are pretty much the most scary roaches on the planet...he kept them in a tank and put Vaseline around the top 2 inches so I knew they couldn't climb out..and they did try. Of course he also kept a lid on them with bricks on the lid...and with all those precautions..I was able to sleep at night. When he cleaned them though my whole body would itch and I had to leave the room....I was very glad when he got rid of his colony though LOL.
