Linux isn't impervious to the issues that Windows faces. I have experienced a plethora of driver issues (albeit, it's mainly due to the fact that most of the said drivers for the hardware used are proprietary). Crashing happens. File corruption can happen. And yes, stuff can break after updates (that is true for ANY program or operating system. That's what patches are for.)

I am not by any means knocking any of the Linux distros. Linux is great (and free unless you get Red Hat or a sparse few others) but until it gets big companies behind it (as in, stuff is being made to run natively it without hours of messing with config files and trying to emulate it) it will remain the underdog of operating systems. The way Linux operates, though, is completely different and it IS much more stable because of it. (Macs are based on UNIX, by the way. At least originally.)

If anyone is interested in trying it out and wants something really user friendly I highly suggest Ubuntu. You can download it and burn it to a CD and try it out without any sort of installation (it's a Live CD that you would reboot with.).

You also have to remember that crashing isn't always a software level problem, it can be hardware issues or it can be a software/hardware combination issue. My windows box is incredibly stable. With PCs, since there is such a huge range of hardware to choose from and combine, software compatibility is inevitably going to be an issue.

Vista is a memory whore. From what I've heard 7 uses a little more RAM than XP does... I'm looking forward to that! I need as much RAM as I can get with the programs I use.

EDIT: Fun fact from the computer graphics industry, Linux is used to run render farms that chunk out all those lovely CG movies. It's also one of the most widely used operating systems for servers.

well, I know that anything can screw up, but so far *knock on wood* my computers have not had one single issue since we changed OS in 2006.
It works for what I need.
But I understand that others have different computer need than I personally do.
I just LOATHE windows.:main_laugh:

only problem i have with windows is vista its slow, SLOW, SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Robin, Vista is a memory whore and it could be that your computer doesn't have enough RAM. What are your computer specs? If you look under your system properties it should give you a very simple break down. The "Rating" is useless, so don't pay attention to that.

For example, here's mine:
Processor: AMD Phenom(TM) 9850 Quad-Core Processor 2.51 GHz
Memory(RAM): 6.00 GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System

The minimum requirements on the box can be deceiving. Just because you meet the minimum does not mean it will run well.

I find it funny that PC users have problems. It's like going out and buying a car that you KNOW for a Fact you're going to have problems with. Buy a Mac live life FREEEEEE.

I don't understand why everyone says that Macs are so expensive. Seriously you can buy a Mac for 500-700. That's cheap. you can get a Mac lap top for 1300. That's cheap.

i want it to be so fast it can fling poop offa thing hehe

MORE RAM MORE RAM MORE RAM lol. Also get ccleaner. Stands for Crap cleaner. Cleans up all the crap on your computer. Don't use the advanced stuff on it if you don't know what it is (if you get it).

It is faster with ccleaner. Takes 20 seconds on my computer. Just used it today and it removed 1 gb of crap in 20 seconds. I use to do it myself but it takes longer =P

One of the biggest issues I have with Macs is that yeah, you can buy a 500-700 dollar Mac..but a PC of the same price is usually much more powerful.

I build my own PCs and I usually have 0 problems with Windows or Linux. It's really a personal preference. Also, Maya runs a hell of a lot better on Windows than on Mac ;)
