I was thinking of getting some colonies Dubia Roaches, Mealworms and Superworms started so I could sell them and have enough for my geckos so that I wouldnt have to have to buy them. Then I started to think,"Would anyone even buy them from me?" So that is the Question would you guys buy feeders from me, or would it be a waste of time. I wouldnt be able to take real big orders but as I sell them Ill be able to save up more money so I can buy more to breed then sell.

Thanks

I would not buy feeders from anyone under the age of 18. Even though it's not illegal to do business with a minor, and 'contract' between and adult and a minor is considered to be illegitimate.

Let's say I bought 1,000 feeders from a minor and sent the money. Then the minor spent the money and didnt ship the feeders. I would not have any legal recourse because I entered into a sales agreement with a minor.

I'm not saying you, or any other minor here on GF would do that, but doing business with anyone under the age of 18 could be risky. Same goes if I sell a gecko to a minor without parental consent, and the gecko bites the kid which results in an emergency room visit. Technically, I could be liable for that.

If your product was good, price was good, then i suppose id buy from you. Although, you do have to take into account what Marica said.

I wouldnt do any of that. I odnt spend my money, save it. I have made $400 over the course of 5-6 years Id say. I recently had a job but then they didnt need me any more. i would also have my parents help me with anything that didnt go through or what ever. Ill do what ever it takes for this to happen.

I think it would be a good idea to get your colony first and experiment with breeding them. At this point you don't know how many you can breed, which means you don't know how many you have available to sell. It will be bad business to advertise and then not be able to accommodate your customers. I would also be hesitant to buy from someone with so little experience with the product. I recommend you gain more experience with the feeders so you know exactly what you can provide and you are sure they are good quality.

SO I should first make sure I have a stable amount and have enough that I can sell them then you guys will reconsider? Im trying to sell feeders so I can work up a little money because I just got laid off. Once I make a little money Ill buy a male Leo or a female Crestie then breed them. Im not looking to make a fast and easy buck, because I know it isnt fast and easy. Im just trying to help my parents.

I think in general it would depend. I personally wouldn't buy from you, as I have a good source of mealworms, hate superworms, and am starting my own colony of dubia. Plus, like Marcia said you really don't have a reputation as a seller of feeders, so no one really knows what you'd do with the money. I agree that I wouldn't knowingly buy from a minor.

You should definitely set up colonies first and see if you will even be successful at it. Just watch out that you don't get too many feeders as you only have the 2 geckos. (Side note, remember if you decide to breed, that you'll need to spend money on housing and incubation stuff.)

You definitely want to have a stable amount of feeders before you start offering them for sale. Most people find a good bug source then stick with it, so you'll want to be able to meet that demand. ;)

Best of luck to you. :)

Chris,

As mentioned, you really need to try to breed the feeders for yourself before you even think about selling them. It is a lot more work then you think. Let's take mealworms as an example. When I have a lot of babies, I go through up to 20,000 per WEEK. I have tried to breed mealworms, but cannot produce enough to keep up with what I need. Plus, we both live in Florida. With the heat here, I have a hard enough time keeping my mealworms alive let alone a breeding colony! When I was in Michigan, I bred them in a cool basement.

I order my mealworms from Sunshine Mealworms. I know a lot of others here do too. I would love to see how they do it. Imagine the amount of mealworms they have if people are ordering 20k a week! Most of these places do not operate out of a house. Most have a farm to raise the feeders on. However, there are MANY feeder suppliers out there that do not breed them at all. They just re-sell another companies feeders.

I'm not trying to discourage you. I just don't think you are understanding the whole picture here. Can it be done? Sure. Learn to breed for yourself first.

That is what I was planning on doing is breeding for myself first. I understand your guys worries of what I would do with the money. All of my money is in the bank and my mother doesnt let me use it, even when she does I still dont use it. I understand it cost money but Im willing to take a shot at this hobbie.
