On a scale of 1-10, how bad is it that I'm spending a portion of my student loans on a couple of new leos and some much needed supplies?

I'm getting $7,000 back from the school after this year and I only plan on spending a few hundred...

If you do not have a steady income stream, it is a poor financial choice. If you do have a steady income stream, you should be using a portion of the excess from that steady stream instead of your student loan debt. If something unexpected happens, you will be that much worse off. If something expensive happens regarding a gecko health emergency, then what will you do? There is a time and a place. While I have had a steady income stream since I was a kid, I did not keep anything I had to pay for beyond the caging itself while I was attending University. In my case, that meant a couple balanced aquaria and nothing else. If I had tortoises, birds, dogs, geckos, and more then like I do now, and something unexpected occurred, I'd be in trouble and I'd prefer not to make a choice between eating and providing medical care for myself and/or my pets. You owe it to yourself to make responsible financial decisions now and you owe it to your potential pets to give them the best care you can in the future.

I've got a steady income, but the money coming back from the school can go one of two places. I overpaid for this term, so it can go into my checking account where it'll mingle with the money I've made/am making, and be partially used for everything from bills, to --the purpose of this thread-- gecko supplies, with plenty to spare to pay for the rest of my education, or it can be stored away in savings until I start up next term. Considering, with my scholarships and grant money, I only pay a little under 1k per term in a 40k per-year private school, and there are only 6 terms left before I graduate, I don't really see a problem with spending a couple hundred recreationally.

It's not that bad as long as your have some other cash in your back pocket. I say more power to ya if they are apart of a project and your going to breed some killer morphs to make a little bit of a profit to pay them off.

Then why did you ask? Formality?

Yeah, that's how I feel. I think I decided I'm going to try for Cremesicles in the hopes that, in a couple seasons, I can start to produce some that at least resemble the morph..

But to do that, I need another snow, and possibly a brighter tang

I wouldn't spend any student loan money that you don't have too. You have to remember that you will have to pay it all back and take it from me, student loan payments are a huge pain in the butt! If we (my boyfriend and I) could cut those two payments from our bills we would be in a completely different financial situation. It may seem like a few hundred dollars now, but with interest and everything, depending on how much you spend, you could be adding 3-4 extra payments or even more. Personally, I would either roll it over and save it for another semester or pay it back, but that's just me. The idea of debt really stresses me out, so I try to pay for everything in full if possible. You can always put away a certain amount of your own cash for a couple months until you have enough for what you need.

Good point. Debt IS icky..

Did want to clarify, though...the money is going to be spent on my tuition regardless--I've got enough.

if it is scholarship money, and not a student loan.. why not spend it for what you want? If your school is paid for and this is just the "left over" money that accumulated from the different scholarships you earned then why not?

I usually get 4-500 back from my college per semester through my scholarships ( i dont pay a dime for school due to good academics ) and once it hits my account my resource counselor says it is my money then, nothing has to be paid back.

If it is money that you borrowed from a loan officer or a bank and has to be paid off due to you borrowing money to go school, then i would definitely not use it on herp supply.

It's a really, really bad idea. Every penny you get back from the school should be sent back to your loan provider to reduce the principle of your loans. I've got nearly $70K in school debt, and seeing people making poor financial choices just hurts. Don't do it.

Well in my opinion it depend on how much and how you save your money overall. I'm pretty strick with my budget everywhere else. But what's 100-200$ (second hand) compared to 60K if it could relief some stress in those damn exam time (like right now hahaha)

pesronaly if the money comes from loans that you took out to pay for school i would NOT spend it. i would use it to pay the loan off.

BUT!! if it is free money, meaning you have good grades so you dont have to pay, then yes i would spend some of it. i go to a small technical college and it is only $1700 a semester but i get normaly $100 back just because they dont use all the money, and i will spend it. normaly it goes to gas tho not my pets! lolol its all up to you!!

I used a student loan for the investment of us starting to breed.. i spent like a grand on everything, buying all the shipping supplies we would need, the incubators, and all sorts of stuff.. i'm not all that great with money, at least I wasn't then :main_rolleyes:

Well that's not bad if there's gonna be an income out of it. If you at least pay the grand (investment) then that would be a succes for me (if I would start breeding) since I'm pretty sure breeding would be a whole lot of fun and a good hobby.
