So on a scale of 1-10..how bad is it..

How bad is it that I'm spending a portion of my student loan on my geckos?

Well that's not bad if there's gonna be an income out of it.

Don't count on it. A lot of people (myself formerly included) think that selling their babies will make them some money, but unless your colony is large enough that you can buy things in bulk, at best you'll break even with your investment. It is far more likely that it'll end up being a money pit than a money maker.

I don't expect to make any sort of money out of this. As I've mentioned before to people who've asked: this is a hobby, not a job :)

if it is an actually student loan as in it might accumulate interest and must be paid back after your graduate I suggest you take that money and send it right back to the bank it came from so you can start paying off your debt before it accumulates because if it is a loan you'll still have to pay that money off in the end even MORE. If it is extra grants, scholarships that don't need to be paid back sure why not, I used to do it. Before I transfered I received close to 3k a semester! I paid credit cards, helped my mom, bought a few things, etc. but now I actually have to pay 6K PLUS $5,500 on loans a year anything extra is rolled over until the next year so I can take out less and less.

PS. Don't bank on your grants or scholarships always being there, remember to read the fine line at the end. Some grants/scholarship are for just freshman, freshman/sophmores or junior/seniors and many others you have to obtain a certain standing with the school. So make sure you know all the ends and outs before you start making plans.

I wouldnt buy any geckos, only supplies. Ur lucky to go to collage I didnt really get a chance because of money and having to take care of my mother who has altimers. I supose if you really dont need the money for school or bills, but remember there will always be one to replace that one you wanted. At least thats how I am, I think that will be the last one and end up finding another one that would be great to add to this or that project. Its really up to you in the end tho.

My initial reaction was, "really really bad". Then I realized that technically, blowing it on Vegas or certain substances might be worse. It gets a "7" in my book.

How about this: wait until the END of your current term, until your new scholarships come in.
If you don't need the money by then for anything else, go on your gecko spree then (with my blessing!).

Perhaps as a method of self-control, look for a Certificate of Deposit (CD) that opens back up right after your new scholarship starts. They do have 6, 9, 12 month CDs. Shop around. :)

This is coming from someone who wishes desperately that she had done college right the first time.

Oh, I planned on waiting until the end of my current term, no worries there. A CD sounds like a good idea, though, I'll look into that.

BUT!! if it is free money, meaning you have good grades so you dont have to pay, then yes i would spend some of it. i go to a small technical college and it is only $1700 a semester but i get normaly $100 back just because they dont use all the money, and i will spend it. normaly it goes to gas tho not my pets! lolol its all up to you!!

well actually now reading the poll... I see that the money is borrowed. Yes it isnt a smart finacial move to spend the extra money on gecko supplies... but if you were able to pay it back with ease then do as you please. :main_thumbsup:

I think it would be a bad move. If you already have a steady income and money in the bank, then use that money to buy geckos. Send the money back . At least thats what I would do

I'm going to make this short, sweet and to the point. Life is too short - purchase the geckos you want with a portion of your student loan and be happy. It might not be the most profitable thing to do , but I'm sure it would be enjoyable. Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

as someone who is paying off $400 a month in student loans... I would be very careful spending it if you didn't need too..It stinks.

+10!!!

Also, just to stick up for my original comment.. we did NOT spend the initial grand expecting to make money from breeding. I know I used the term "investment" but only due to lack of a better one. We think we may break even eventually, who knows.. but that wasn't why we did this, we spent the money because we wanted to enjoy all of the perks of breeding and make sure that we got all of the supplies we needed to start out (and it's been a very enjoyable time indeed :D)

One thing about us though, is that I don't have to start paying my loans back for another year or two.. so I haven't had to deal with that burden yet.

Curiosity, more than anything. I've a mind that can be swayed with reason...so basically if I got some good arguments I couldn't counter, I'd reconsider the idea.

I also LOVE how you worded this.. I am the EXACT same way!! I will get an idea in my head and will be all for it, but also want people to try to persuade me out of it to see if I still want to go with my idea or not.. always thought I was a tad bit weird lol

Yep, won't be paying mine back for another 3 years..unless I get into law school...in which case, it's six. Probably poor planning, I suppose, but that date is so far into the future it seems almost unreal.

Lol if you're weird we can definitely be weird together!

is it cash or credit, if u don't have cash u really don't have the money. u know your financial status better than anyone!! I love 2 c people get what they want but it must be within your means and sometimes we all (myself included) justify a purchase because of the hard work we do be it school/work/both/+ other responsibilities but remember u worked hard to get grants and if it is extra CASH N NOT CREDIT than go for it anD ENJOY!!:)

i've bought a bass guitar, digital camera, amp, and all kinds of other stuff with the excess before. Just never forget it's going to HAVE to be paid back, apparently most of us forgot this until recently.
