Sonogram

Tomorrow I have to go to the hospital for a pelvic sonogram and I'm kind of nervous. I'm not pregnant - they are trying to verify whether I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (likely, due to blood test results) or something worse (uterine or ovarian growths or tumors.)

Anyone had one before? I'm looking for reassurance since I'm a wuss when it comes to medical procedures.

Well, they're going to make you fill your bladder. They have to do that to be able to see your uterus and your ovaries well. The technician usually tries to get it done fast, so you can use the bathroom right afterward. And don't worry, the bathroom is right in the room. You're going to be pretty uncomfortable from needing to pee real bad, but that's about it.

I hope everything turns out okay. I had emergency surgery in July because I had a baseball sized hemmorhagic cyst rupture and bleed into my abdomen. It was no fun, so if you do have a problem, prevention is key to avoiding bad stuff like I went thru. Usually it's something as simple as a low dose birth control pills, the hormones keep you in check. :main_thumbsup:

I have PCOS, so let me know if you have any questions.

When I was diagnosed, I had a vaginal ultrasound instead of the normal kind. It's much easier because you don't have to drink any water. My RE was awesome and explained everything on screen so well that I knew what I was looking at everytime I had one. The regular ones are hard for me because I have a weak bladder and can't drink that much water, but I've had some of those, too. There's really nothing to worry about with either kind. They're pretty quick. You'll be able to see the cysts on your ovaries if you have it. They're small, but they sometimes tell you that it looks like a string of pearls on your ovaries. The yuckiest thing with the regular ultrasounds is the goo they put on your belly. It's cold and yucky, but it wipes right off afterwards.

Good luck!

I agree with Maia. Unless you're trying to get pregnant, go on birth control pills. My husband and I tried for over 7 years and my body is really messed up now. I started birth control on Sunday for the first time in 13+ years. I can't wait to feel somewhat normal again.

Thanks, Maia, that makes me feel better. I've been on low dose BC (pill) for about three years but prior to that I was in debilitating pain due to the monthly visit from Aunt Flo. My blood results are pointing towards PCOS so if it's anything I hope it is that and not tumors.

Kristi, thanks, you might be hearing from me soon haha. :) I'm glad to hear that the procedure is fairly quick. The last time I had a sonogram it was some what traumatic (I was young, though.) I hope you start to feel better! Luckily I am not planning on having kids any time soon (or at all, really..) so we'll see how things go. The BC I was on was making me crazy so I am hoping to get an IUD if everything looks okay.

i have polycystic ovaries. have then since i was like 18. i started birth control then and have been on it most of my life. i have had two kinds of ultra sounds ones where they put the warm gel on your abdomen and look in there with the thing (no filling of the bladder) and i have also had internal vaginal ones. while the second one isnt all fun and games it gives the best results. once you get them under control and follow what your doctor says everything is all "normal" you will feel much better.

I hope all is well Kasey..

I know all to well about abnormal blood test they are so nerve wrenching. I really hope you don't have anything and it was a "glitch."

I know many woman that have PCOS and it can get crazy but are in good pretty good health, I've also known women like my mother that had a beign tumor on her ovary and had it removed and is doing just fine. Just take it easy until you know the results for sure because there's always some course of action.

Hope all is well..

Kasey, have you gotten the results yet? I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago when a blood test and other testing came back and showed that I was just not ovulating, period (no pun intended :)) I was then put on a birth control, which was then changed 3 times in the last 3 months due to my reactions...you can imagine what that did to my body! I was absolutely terrified at first because I want children more than anything, and feared that was the end of that. Turns out fertility drugs can and do work miracles :) So I definitely have been through quite a bit...if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here :)

Hey, Heather, thanks!

I'm pretty frustrated with the hospital/medical center that's handling my results..I have none yet! I was told I'd have them last Thursday.. nope! I've called a few times but to no avail. I'm going to call again tomorrow morning.

I can imagine what you went through with the BC. The one I ended up on made me really psychotic! Here's hoping I can get an IUD.. haha. >.<

Thank you all again for all the support !!

Oh, thank you too, Ken! Sorry, couldn't see you past all the estrogen in here ;)

Heather, what pill are you on now? I just started the pill for the first time since I was 18. I started on Sunday which was cycle day 91 for me! I am so ready to feel somewhat normal again. Being on the pill will help you for when you want to have kids. I got pregnant with my daughter a few months after getting off them. Unfortunately, I've never been able to carry a pregnancy to term again. I wish you the best of luck when you're ready.

Kasey, I hope you get your results soon. I'm amazed at how many of us here have PCOS. I was diagnosed about 6 years ago and had never even heard of it.

if the BC they put you on didnt work well they will put you on a low dose one. considering your age they will not let you get an IUD.
