So i'm thinking about getting a tattoo, obviously I can't do it right now but I want to pick out a design and have it ready and carry it around a couple of years ya know, to see if that's really what I want to do.

But I just can't decide where I want the tattoo, how big and if I want color or a simple black and white tribal like on angelina's wanted movie (LOVED that tattoo)

I want something mysterious that wraps around and blends in ya know, I don't like just random pictures plastered all over, I want it too look one with my body. My body being the whole canvas in all, random pictures really throw off the composistion if ya get my drift, so it needs to be balanced.

I want your guys advice about colors and fading
about painful spots
about artists, and how to know if you found a good one
then finally if you guys know a good place for free I can look at tattoos.

Thanks
Hal

oh and obviously I know abot the whole job interview thing and permitant acpect of it, that's why I'm looking and even if I do find the perfect design i'm not i'll even do it (so please no lectures, thanks ;))

I would suggest being very careful tattoos are highly addictive =]
I would go with color and make it big. I have a couple tats that im mad are so small
Go to some local tat shops and look in the artist book they all should have one.
Most arstist specialize in whatever type of art they do. You can also look online most keep pages or their art. Fading on tats happen colors bleed. Depending upon where you go and I guess how big your tat is lots of places will re color after the first year for free. Something to ask them about when you go.

ah Tattoos a sweet sweet dangerous addiction. Colors really only fade if you don't take care of it. Meaning don't put it in the sun or tanning bed for at least 1-2 years after you get it.

Painful spots.....that's a trick question most people will tell you that there are some spots it doesn't hurt at all. Well that's a lie. i have gotten plenty of tattoos, some in the not so painful areas and then some hurt so bad that i had to take some thing to help with the pain. In short all areas on your body hurt it's just how much pain do you want?

as far as artisit, you just have to talk with people and view their work there is really no way other then that to find the artist that fits your style.

Go to any tatt shop and look at the flash they have hanging around the place. Tribal is typically something most artist don't like to do because it's boring to them.

From looking at other peoples tatts on the fourms, i would have to say that Mel and Keith have a GREAT artist. Then again i'm very much so into the style he does on them. Bold vibrant colors and just non-conventional stuff.

actually if colors bleed that it is a sign of a poor tattoo artist that doesn't know the right preasure to use when applying the pigment. I have been going to the same guy for years and have never had that happen.

Mel and Keiths artist is the best that i have seen on the forums. the way he blends, fades, and shades color is amazing.

also to keep color from fading it's how well you take care of it while its in the scabbing process. i recommend H2Ocean. it's a salt water based lotion that has a line for piercings as well as it's used in some operating rooms to sterelize and clean medical equipment.

I have tats and have always prefered the black to colors. Im going to get one on the top of my foot. as for pain goes, I found the most painful one to be on the spine, the others I did not find painful at all, they are more annoying then painful. go in a tattoo shop and sit and talk to the artist if he has a free moment check out his work and decide if you like his style, check if his studio is clean and always watch that they use a new needle. tattoos are addicting so be careful.

Brace yourself for the one on top of your foot. I have one on my back and one on my foot and the foot one hurt like hell!!!

I wanted a tattoo when I was around 16, but I drew and played with different ideas and ended up waiting until I was 19 to get my first one. It must have changed like a hundred times before I settled on something. I didn't do a lot of research on an artist before getting my first one, but lucked out and got a good one. I would definitely ask around and talk to different people first. Also, don't be afraid to go big. I think a lot of people are afraid to go big with the first one and later wish they had.
As far as pain, the one on my back only really, really hurt in some places while others just felt like vibrations. It will really probably just depend on you and your pain tolerance.

I love tattoos:main_laugh:(& they are addicting), I'm hoping one day to become a tattoo artist. I have several tattoos I'm planning to get.

Sides hurt(a little) & feet, hands, & toes hurt the worst & ankles hurt the least, but you definitely want it somewhere you can cover it up like back, neck, side, belly upper leg, high upper arm, back shoulders.

I'm a fan of black tribal, heres a few photos of some awesome tats that I like.

JUST MAKE SURE ITS SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL LIKE YEARS FROM NOW, CAUSE YOU'LL BE STUCK WITH IT!!

Make sure the parlor where you go to get you tat is VERY clean, VERY organized & ask how good their ink is, a lot of tattoo parlors have the crapy ink that fades in a few years. black will start to look grey & colors will look pastel.

I have to agree with Jenn, over the spine really hurts!!

It's going to be on your body so you have to make sure it's something YOU really want to be with you forever!

All of mine are in places that can be hidden even if in a nice dress as long as the back doesn't dip too much. That may change as I'm thinking of getting one on the top of my foot and my wedding band coppied onto my finger.

As for care of your tat, make sure that if you get one on your back where you can't reach it, have someone available to care for it for you..... I have to have the one on my back touched up because I couldn't take care of it and no one here at the time while it was healing.

I was thinking of a tribal on the back of my neck that wraps up around my ear and you can see just the tips of it poking on my cheek, but with my bangs and hair you wouldn't see it till I pulled it up

but yes I want to wait, I know so many people who regret it
also don't they look ugly when you turn old and saggy?

actually i did a whole session on my shin done. i think i would rather have my shin worked on the my achilies tendon again. The shin felt GOOOOD. yeah i know weird but it did. i wouldn't suggesting doing a whole 5 hour sitting on the inside of your arm done. that really sucks, especially when it gets into your arm pit.

just remember muscle will hurt more then fat due to alot more nerve endings are there.

also, let the artist do whatever he thinks is right by the design that you choose. If he's not having a good time doing it then you're not going to get 100% from the artist.

i know this because i lived with an artist for 2 years and is very good friends with MANY tattoo artist and they all say the same thing. "let me do what i want and you will get your money's worth"

We just got back from a tattoo convention. We saw a lot of good tattoos and a lot of bad tattoos. Here are my tips for getting a good one -

a. Pick an artist that suits your style.

b. Get ready to pay! Most artists charge at least $100 an hour. Generally a color tattoo the size of your palm will take 2-3 hours. The size of an open hand, 3-6 hours. If you can't afford what you want save your money until you have enough. Saving a couple hundred dollars is not worth a lifetime of regret!

c. Choose the placement by how that tattoo will fit the area, not where it will hurt the least. They all hurt but it's never anything you can't get through. ;)

d. Don't pick a tattoo, pick an idea. When people ask about my tattoos I say, "I come up with lame ideas, my artist makes them amazing. That's why he gets paid the big bucks and I don't!" LOL Even if you are an amazing artist it doesn't mean that your drawing will translate into a great tattoo. Don't pick flash of the wall! Get something no one else has.

e. Don't try to fit too much detail into a small space. All tattoos fade and bleed over the years. Well applied tattoos can stay looking great for a lifetime but if the lines are too close together, they'll end up running together at some point.

f. If you can't find an artist that you like locally find out in any conventions are coming and check out all of the artists. They're are a lot of amazing artists who just travel all over the world and don't even work at a specific shop. If you find one you like contact them and make an appointment for the show.

oh yes I know it'll cost a lot that's another reason I'm waiting, but the main reason is I go through phases and I want to make sure it's something I really do want and I don't want something someone has, and I know I don't want to do the design because I am quickly bored of my art, but I have an idea how I want it to look, there was someone on Miami ink or maybe it was kats show that I absolutley loved his artwork he did an awesome dj girl on a girls back, it was awesome!!!!!

I really want my tattoos to look something like this ya know, but be in swedish, something saying like fear..it has been taken over and have like a bar code and in their a oriental tiger and a epic horse all blended together to look like a tribal symbol or like you've been marked. and have it start at my neck and come down the middle of my back and just off my shoulders....

what do guys think of that? kind of cool eh

Oh and I wanted an oriental tiger on it before I even knew that what was on her, she just happened to have the style I was looking for
