Update on the Girls

It's been a while since I was online here! School got nuts there for a bit, but it's looking like things are better now so I figured catching up here and an update was in order.

So the girls! They're doing wonderfully, Kaida went through a few months of just jumping from hide to hide and not really wanting any attention on her at all. I think she ate like maybe one or two mealworms a month, but now she's opening up and I've seen her chow down a few nights, and she regaining the weight she lost. She was 51grams when I first got her and she steadily dropped down to 47grams, but now she's back up to 52grams! I'm so happy, I was getting worried about her there for a while, but I think she was just trying to get used to her new home.

Kazana has now been renamed Leonith, reason for that being that I'm an active member on a Dragonriders of Pern Role Play Forum, and one of my RP characters recently impressed a Golden Queen dragon (this will probably be confusing for anyone who isn't familiar with Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, and probably even more so for those who aren't familiar with Role Play). Well, this dragon is the size of a Blue so she's smaller than her Golden sisters, and shortly there after I started finding myself wanting to call Kazana, Leonith! At first I was like "ugh it's KAZANA not LEONITH!! Get it straight girl!" but after a while it started to stick. I think because she's smaller than Kaida, she's a bright orange/yellow (like a Gold dragon) and to me they look like little smiling dragons, so I guess that's why. That and I have a blast RPing my Golden dragon and her rider, so that might have been another contributing factor. Either way though, long story short, Kazana is now Leonith.

Well Leonith was around 15grams when I first got her, and now, after around a month or so of hiding out, she is now 35grams, over doubled her weight and she's growing some. She's also the one that loves to check my hand out when I'm doing something inside her tank, and if she's not out and about when I start doing something in her tank it's not long before her little head is pocking out from one of her hides to see what's going on. She's also spunky and went through a phase there for a while where she'd stalk me as I sat watching her from outside her tank, and when she's get close enough she'd try to strike. I have NO idea what she was thinking, but it was so CUTE!

OH and I actually successfully got some stuck shed off of one of Leonith's back toes! It was on her toe during our little photoshoot but I got it off afterwards, so if you see it in any of the pics it's gone now so no worries. I was freaked at first, wondering how I'd get it off, but I thought I remembered reading someplace (here or maybe on another reptile forum or site) to let them sit in some warm water (not too hot of course) for a bit and then it should be easier to get off. Well I let her sit for a bit and then tried to get her to sit still so I could try and get the shed off. That took a little bit because she wanted to crawl, but eventually she just sat on the back of my hand and I was able to pull the shed off. It came off like a glove too! So smooth and easy! I was so happy, I haven't had to do anything like that yet, so I was a little worried at first, but now I've got a little more confidence in my ability, so I'm happy. Hope I did things right, it came off alright and she's happy, so I guess it was alright.

I'm hoping they're happy now, they're so much fun and I'm so glad I was turned on to leopard gecko ownership.

Anyway, the pics aren't the best in the world, and I'm not sure if it was me or if it might be because the camera is old lol. It's got little quirks about it that I had to figure out in order to get these pictures, like when zoomed in all the way on the Auto setting, every picture comes out blurry, so I used the Micro setting which I think was probably the best anyway.

I made one of those little photoboxes (I think that's what you call them anyway) and had a blast trying it out.

Anyway, here's the girls, and the pics were taken last Thursday so this is what the girls look like now.

They are both great, and you take wonderful pictures. Kaida reminds me of a friend's gecko that I kept once. She was a sweet girl. Leonith is beautiful.

I'm so happy you posted update pics, Jessica! We've been wondering how the tiny RW was doing. I think Leonith is the perfect name for her. I had named her mother Gilda because it means Gold. It's hard to get the truly golden color to show up in photos but you did a great job. It's looks like you've been taking great care of them!

aww thanks everyone *hug* I've been missing checking out all the pics and the information to be had here ^^

Paco: lol I've read a few of the books, but I got hooked on them back in middle school too, although, for me that was around 9 to 10 years ago

Mel: she's doing wonderfully! and that little bit that happened with her leg hasn't happened since, so not sure what that was about, but I'm thinking she's good now. LOVING her mealworms too! I hope that maybe a new camera would help take some better pics, but considering the situation and the equipment I was really surprised at how these turned out, and she is quite "gold" my family loves her, she's so spunky and colorful lol thanks again, she's been a wonderful addition to our family ^^

Debbie: thank you *hug* and no worries, I think she was probably just homesick or shocked about the move or something, she's happy now, I just weighed them this morning and Leonith is now 37grams, and Kaida is at 57grams now, and she looked like she was about to shed again. I'm so happy that she's relaxing a bit now, she doesn't run away in the blink of an eye when I enter the room anymore either lol

thanks everyone for the lovely comments ^^
