Alright, carrot slices just aren't working. Use a veggie peeler and they dry up in hours. Anything thicker, these tiny worms don't seem to be able to eat them. What are you guys giving them for water? I thought maybe those cricket water gel things? Especially for those tiny ones you can hardly see.

I don't know about the cricket water gels, but I have (and still do sometimes) use the orange cricket cubes. They eat them like crazy. I am not sure how nutritious those are, but I figure combining that with the dry gutload would be just fine.

I use the Orange Cricket cubes and my mealie colony devours them faster then the crix.

I throw all my vegetable parings in. They seem to like eggplant, believe it or not. I don't give the tiny ones that much, but when they get bigger they eat anything.

I even breed mealies using my method, like I said it works for me.

^^sorry, Ive heard of that method. I was talking to the thread starter, carrots are the best I have ever used. The only thing that I don't like about misting it is it makes mold really easily.

I know what you mean. I don't use a cover and I don't get mold. The few times that I did cover the cage, I started to get mold.

Or you could just poke bigger holes in the lid?

When I said covered, I meant that I sat something on top of it. I use a 10 gallon tank for my mealies so a screen cover wouldn't be an issue. I sat my super worms tub on top of the mealies cage and that pretty much covered the entire top. That's why I got the mold.

I don't put any kind of top on my mealie colony and I use apples for them as well as the bran of course...seems to work fine, my roughly 5000 mealies go through an apple in a day...twice a week....pigs lol

For a while I had a folded paper towel for the mealies that I would mist (I had mold and clumping issues- why you should never buy instant meal...). It worked great until my mister got commandeered to correct the dogs. The number of times that has happened... anyway- you have to change the paper towel on occasion as it gets all holey. I like that better than directly misting the oats. Now I do put in the veggies, though- with my new parrot I have lots more veggie and fruit scraps.
