Newspaper, but have been thinking of switching to tile. Sometimes I think they enjoy reading the legal announcements, though, so I hate to deny them that enjoyment!
Pond Pebbles here. You can buy a large bag, like 20lbs for $5 at home depot.
Plus it looks natural, and just about every pebble is biggger then a geckos mouth.
I personally think it is the best substrate to use instead of sand, peet moss. and wood chips.
In tanks i use repti-carpet, but in tubs I use paper towel, just cause its cheap and easy , and the tanks are kinda "on display" so i want it to look nice with tubs its more just convenience.
I use brown butcher paper(kraft) and I love it.It works great and you can cut it to fit any tub or cages that you use and it last a very long time and so far I have about 80 leopard geckos so cleaning is made easier and alot quicker.
We go to our local harris teeter weekly, and they just throw away the old ones, so we always grab a bunch before they do. We spoke to them about it, and they don;t mind at all.
So its 100% free.... all we have to do is fold them a bit to make them fit the tanks.
Are these shelf liners okay to use??? I think they'd work great, but I want to make sure there isn't a danger of using them, before going out and buying them.
I voted tile because I used linoleum, which was very cheap but...just plain ugly. Now I have switched to Eco Earth Coco Fiber. I have pictures of my set-up in an album on my page if anyone cares.

They are completely safe. The geckos cant eat them, they are non toxic anyways. We usually put them on the counter and set our dishes on them. Thats what they were made for acctually. To put your dishes on. They are non slip so it doesnt slide around on the glass of your tank or the plastic of your bins. You can toss them in the washer or soak them in some diluted bleach water to clean them. And they dont melt when you put a heat pad under the container or tank. I just absolutely love them.
