I have been told different things. The petstore (a national chain one the 2 ajor ones--as i know i am not supposed to say which one) that said, I was told to keep them in the fridge--so i just keep them in the container i bought them in and put them in the fridge, then take them out when i feed. Is this bad for the mealies? what is the proper way keeping them?

If you keep them in the fridge, you should take them out for 24 hours every week or so to let them warm up and eat. Personally, I felt I had too many mealie deaths with them in the fridge (although others find there's no problem) so I don't put mine in the fridge. If they turn into aliens, I'm breeding them anyway so I just add them to my collection. I keep mine in one of those plastic faunariums or critter keepers that has the plastic lid with the vent holes.

The only other thing to think about is that the stuff they come in from the pet store isn't that nutritious. For most nutritious mealies, it's best to grind up some good whole grains in the blender and put them in there.

I breed mine so I usually keep them in those plastic bin things on wheels from walmart. My husband added screened opening to the front so they get lots of air. They are in the utility room so it stays semi cool in there.

how do you breed them? Do they breed fast enough to keep a continuous supply?

For, lets say, 10 geckos, how many mealies would I need to start with the keep enough constantly breeding and still feed them?

Fridge and one day before feeding I get them out and feed them with all sorts of veggies and cat-food.

i have mine in tupperware containers full of whole wheat pancake mix and vitamins/calcium. i put carrot slices in every so often to give them moisture. the one container started out as the tiny baby mealies but now it's the one i use for feeding. one has toilet paper rolls cut into pieces on top of the bedding mixture and i put the pupae (aliens) in there to turn into beetles and leave the beetles in there to breed and lay eggs. after a while i'll be sifting that container out and putting the small mealies into a new container.

We keep ours in the fridge and take them out in the morning before I'm going to feed the geckos and let them eat gutload and potatoes for at least a few hours.

I started out with 2000 ( I ordered them online). I devided them into different containers that I kept in a warm room. After a couple of weeks they started turning into aliens. I would sort the aliens out into another container and wait for them to turn into bugs. The bugs I put into our drawer system that we have. Once every 2 weeks I sift the bug drawers out and put the sifted bedding into a drawer and the bugs into clean whole wheat meal "bedding". I keep fresh sliced potatoes and carrots in all the drawers. We have 6 drawers of bugs right now and 6 drawers of various size worms. I started my colony in October. I seem to always have enough food for all 24 of our geckos and i have a couple of people that buy them from me. I also always keep 1 bin of worms that I let turn into fresh bugs so I keep my colony going. Raising our own bugs has saved us quite a bit of money.

I keep mine in a mini fridge that stays at about 50 degrees F. The death lose is minor in my setup. I just take out what I need for the next week or two and put them in a container with gutload. They get to eat for at least 24 hours before they're fed to my leos.
