LHIH: Having been a recipient of these injections --no frogs in the equation though-- I can say that they are somewhat painful, but can have good results (I have twins and was not consumed by my husband)
Newbies doing research: as a home care speech therapist I see people who have organization/planning problems because of brain damage and some of their family members with the same problems who don't have brain damage. All I can say is that there is quite a range of planning ahead and organizing abilities in non-damaged humans. Most people who keep the common pets --fish, cats, dogs, birds-- are used to the idea that you buy the animal, the food and the appropriate containers and that's that. In some cases, like cat care, where the basics are in a way part of our culture, it works fine and in other cases it doesn't work ideally but the animal lives a long enough time that the owner assumes it has died of natural causes. When thinking about getting a reptile, many people just don't know that there is more involved than buying a cage and (sometimes canned) food. This is either because they don't know that it can be more involved or because they are like some of the non-brain damaged family members I meet that I have to treat along the patients. It does frustrate those of us who know better but I also find that patience and understanding go further than annoyance and scorn even though it's frustrating.
