Why don't more people simply read up on geckos before getting them?

LHIH: Having been a recipient of these injections --no frogs in the equation though-- I can say that they are somewhat painful, but can have good results (I have twins and was not consumed by my husband)

Newbies doing research: as a home care speech therapist I see people who have organization/planning problems because of brain damage and some of their family members with the same problems who don't have brain damage. All I can say is that there is quite a range of planning ahead and organizing abilities in non-damaged humans. Most people who keep the common pets --fish, cats, dogs, birds-- are used to the idea that you buy the animal, the food and the appropriate containers and that's that. In some cases, like cat care, where the basics are in a way part of our culture, it works fine and in other cases it doesn't work ideally but the animal lives a long enough time that the owner assumes it has died of natural causes. When thinking about getting a reptile, many people just don't know that there is more involved than buying a cage and (sometimes canned) food. This is either because they don't know that it can be more involved or because they are like some of the non-brain damaged family members I meet that I have to treat along the patients. It does frustrate those of us who know better but I also find that patience and understanding go further than annoyance and scorn even though it's frustrating.

There's tons of info on leopard geckos online. In less than a few hours you can probably get your PHD in leopard geckos just by typing leopard geckos into Google and reading what's there. Seems that so many people first bring the gecko home and then they try to figure out how to care for it. Or walk into a pet store totally in the dark. I don't get it.

think most ppl Have done research online, books, friends ... but still there is aways right way and a wrong way to do everything .... most ppl on the internet still have there geckos on SAND ,,,and pet stores Are there to sell you stuff....and give you mostly wrong info for the most part.....like when someone buys a pair of shoes do you research them or just go to the local Wally world and get them and find out the not what you really wanted...

I am glad the people are here that dont know what There doing and can get the Correct Info .......

POST-ON Newbies ask away ....But this only my Thoughts ...anyhow just like your Post

P.S at One time we where all Newbies!

Just disregard my original post. Maybe it came out the wrong way. I was just frustrated that some people bring their geckos home with very little knowledge of how to care for them. I was just suggesting that they do some simple reasearch before bringing them home. That's all. Was that wrong? Doesn't it bother anyone here when someone posts that they have no idea how to care for their gecko after they have gotten it? Yes I bombarded you guys with a flood of questions when I rescued mine. And you graciously answered all of my questions. Had I known in advance that I was getting a gecko I would have done some resaerch beforehand and not after the fact. But in my case at 1:59pm I had no plans on getting a gecko and by 2:05pm I had him in the car and on the way back to my house. I had no choice but to do the research after I got him in my case.

Well to be honest, I knew about lizards, or had common sense about them, but I walked into a reptile show, didn't think I'd be walking out with my little guy, but hey it happened. I immediately began doing research to make sure he had the proper care. Took a little bit of adjustment but once I knew I had the right set up and he seemed to adjust well to it, I knew I was doing my job right! But lots of research definitely helps :)

Do not take what I'm about to say negatively. Rather I want you to think about your initial post for this thread, what you say below, and my responses to them. Again, think about it, don't react to my responses. I'm not trying to jump down your throat in any way!

Had I not rescued mine when I did he'd be dead now for sure. I didn't have time for any research until after I got him.

You let an assumed unethical situation control your emotion(s) impulsely. That logic is not a good means to addressing the overall issue, but rather directly and indirectly perpetuating that assumed unethical situation in which your gecko was formerly in. That 2nd sentence is just you merely utilizing such emotions to rationalize the impulse buy.

I was just frustrated that some people bring their geckos home with very little knowledge of how to care for them. I was just suggesting that they do some simple reasearch before bringing them home.

Don't you think those 2 sentences are hypocritical given your quoted situation?

To make this a little more light hearted and show that I genuinely mean no ill will...

::coughcough:: He didn't buy his. It was a "take it or I toss it" situation with another end consumer.

I just found it amusing given seamus' scenario and then you replying. Ice tea almost made it out my mouth and onto the monitor.
