a tip for Enigma owners

Im not sure if anyone else observed this but the enigma I purchased wasnt eating like I wished she would. The weird thing was, she's out there hunting at night and looked like she was hungry but wasnt really eating and deficating. After talking with another enigma owner, I kind of thought she may have had some difficulty seeing the food items. I switched over to plain newspaper with no print and wamo! She began to eat like crazy. Maybe Kelli could ad to this, do these guys see a little differently? Anyone else have this problem? Until we have all the answers to these guys we should start like a small registration type thing for these enigmas. We did it in the snake world a few times for some special animals and it really helped in keeping a record of whos breeding to what and whos having this problem and that problem. Just a thought. Thanks. Mike Panichi

Yes, I have noticed that some of them seem to have slight vision problems, especially the "Normal" ENigmas with the more reddish/orange colored eyes. I haven't had any problems AT ALL with any of the babies I have hatched out thus far, so that's a good sign.

I don't have an enigma but it sounds like from the first post its maybe a substrate thing since you moved him/her to plain newspaper with no print , Im just wondering what substrate you WERE using.

This kinda ties into a thread I started when I first came here. I was asking if there were any noticeable health issues with different morphs (life-span, parasites, vision, etc). It just seemed to me that if breeders were changing colors so drastically, that other areas might be affected as well. No one seemed to know of anything, so this is the first I have really heard of anything of that sort.

Blizzards were effected by inbreeding and tend to have a sour attitude

regular newspaper from the driveway, LOL. I keep rolls of unprinted newpaper around for my snakes so I tried that. I think the print may have confused the enigma and helped conceal the prey items. This all just my opinion of course but it was based on my observations before and after. Thanks

I have not noticed any vision problems in my Enigma... She seems to see and eat just as good as my non-Enigmas... Like all of my leos she has been kept on plain paper towels since the day I got her... I offer her mealies in a snapple cap and she hunts crickets and roaches just fine...

I think the "pattern" of the printed paper could have something to do with it.

I always suspected some of them could have vision problems because of the funky eyes. Glad to hear your's aren't experiencing it. Maybe due to outcrossing?

Don't NON red eyed enigmas though having red in the iris still have black pupils ?? i can't see how iris color if the pupil is still black would affect vishion ? i know that albino can have a hard time with sight as the albinoism make the pupils red making them more sensitive to light. If only some NON red eyed enigmas are having a hard time with sight it's very much possible a enigma ancester may have had a inherited eye problem-(like inheritry cataract in some dog breeds'etc) so not really link to the iris color but will now be involed with the morph. So if that is possibly is the case it's deffantly good that they are a dominant morph rather than a recessive morph as you have more control over there breeding parters and don't have to breed enigma X enigma to get enigma so hopfully won't become a really big problem.Only time will tell with each generation.

None ofmy 2.5 blizzards have saour attitudes. I do have a couple that are rather skittish, though.

As far as the Enigma's not eating, my red-eyed female (Bell stock) is not a good eater, and it does seem like she has vision problems. My red-eyed male and golden-eyed female (HISS stock) eat very well.
