I do want to say thank you to anyone who has answered my questions. As much as I research, I don't always find the answers to my questions. I also love getting other's opinions on breeding projects. I hope no one takes it as me not knowing what to do.;)

I second this. :) I know I've asked questions, and had many wonderful, patient people to help me along the way. For me, I don't think it's asking questions so much as people not doing a lick of research, and wanting me to spoon feed them. Or, like Mallorie says, put two geckos together, have them breed (or fight, if they're both males - and yes, I've had that email too), and THEN ask "gee, could they be breeding?" "How come my geckos are fighting?" :main_thumbsdown:

I pride myself on doing research about animals prior to purchasing them. I haven't always done this (when I was younger), but as an adult - after having some pretty dismal experiences - I work really hard to understand what I'm getting myself into PRIOR to getting myself into it. I don't expect all people to be like me, or like most of us here that do our research ahead of time, but I am not particularly tolerant of people who are too lazy/too insert-your-own-word-here to do even BASIC research - like what to feed a leopard gecko - primarily because it is my experience that people LEARN better when they have to EARN the knowledge themselves. Hope that makes sense......and doesn't discourage people from asking well thought out questions. ;)

Debbie- What's been happening with our eggs is that they seem to be fertile, the embryo developes maybe a week and then it dies...it goes past the due date and then dries out and I can see that they're all dying at the same age in the eggs. :( It's so strage. We've gotten cleaner, and fed our females more than ever this season only to get worse results than we had last year. Out of 20 clutches, we've had two hatch. :(

I've had some similar luck here, Mallorie. :( I've gotten more infertile eggs, and eggs that are clearly fertile, and then poof, mold over and die a few weeks prior to their hatch date. It really sucks. I'm also trying to do some things differently to see if I can up my odds. *sighs*

Sorry to see quite a few of us in the same crummy boat. :( Hey, who sold us these crappy boats anyway? I want a new one!!! :main_laugh:

I agree with what everyone is saying. I for one have asked alot of questions on here and have learned a ton of information on this very site. I have bought the books from genetics for herpers to Trempers book and after reading those books about 36 times each I still have questions but I also try to look for the answers first. I am quilty of buying then asking and I know that I was wrong for doing that but I am learning something new everyday. I go to a Reptile club everymonth and I am amazed by the questions that some people ask. But I do my best to answer them and if I cant then I tell them to search online and I will be the same.

I think one of the things that make me cringe the most is: "I just got this gecko, it's my first reptile, when can I breed it/what can I breed it to?"

As I've said before, I've nothing against breeding! I just don't understand why people just want to jump right into breeding and not even take the time to enjoy their animals as pets or even bother to get to know what they're wanting to breed. It's just so frustrating to me.

Even though we've had a bad season, it's made me appreciate hatching a baby. Also, it's made me realize how happy I am just having the geckos we do without producing anything. I do wish sometimes that people would see how nice it is to just have a collection and not produce anything. Instead of having lots of new babies, we can concentrate on our adults and learn about their personalities even more.

Once again I agree with you all again. I have asked alot of questions but when I get a answer I listen to what is being said. I am always willing to listen to what people have to say, I have sit in the chat room for hours on hours listening to Paul, Gregg, Mike along with a few others that I feel know exactly what there talking about. I also dig threw the forums when I have a question come up. Kelli has made it so easy to find exactly what topic you are looking for and for the most part there is two or three people that have already asked the same question I was thinking of. I have also read Ron's book and I always suggest new keepers to join this forum and buy that book as both will really help anyone with any questions on care and breeding of leopard geckos. But like I stated before my big problem is these pet store workers pushing product and really not knowing what there talking about and the new buyer taking that word as gold and not willing to check out any of the information I point them to. I know not all pet store workers are giving bad advice but there is ten times more bad advice given than good.

Ugh. I work at ******** in the "Pet Care" Department and pride myself on giving good advice. If I don't know the answer, I'm going to tell you that.

Anyway.. We have a new girl in the department who transferred from another store. This past weekend I was talking to potential customers about the proper care of a leopard gecko because they wanted one for their son. This girl comes up next to me while I'm talking to the customers and starts contradicting EVERY. THING. I. SAY. I was talking to them about the hazards of sand and she busts out with "Well, sand is better if you don't want to clean as often! Carpet and paper towel need to be changed too much." I gave her a death glare and continued about UTH's.. To which she contradicted that heat lamps are sooo much easier. -.-;
Then.. The customers asked why there was a price difference for our Albinos and our others and she says "Albinos are more rare.. However, the "normals" we have right now aren't normal. Honestly, they aren't even leopard geckos!" I was like "What?! Yes they are.." Her: No, they're blizzards! They're MUCH more expensive!
Anyway.. To make a long story shorter.. the customers walked away and I had to walk away from her before I said some pretty bitchy things. lol. :x
She knows I have leopard geckos and she still contradicts me with complete bullshit.. IN FRONT of customers? UGH~

I agree Eric that people can ask questions. But i also think they should be able to research things for themselves before they breed their geckos. It's not the questions about care and genetics that bother me. It's when people have already bred their geckos and then i try to tell them about genetics because they ask a question. Then when u give them an answer, they say they know it all.

That's what I do as well Kelli. I get emails, texts, etc from people that know me and want to get their kid a gecko. I just write down the address to this site on a piece of paper and hand it to them...so much easier then explaining things again and again and again!

I just refer most people that ask me general leo questions to GeckoForums now.

Thats what I do too! I think that might be why you are getting more canadians lol! I enjoy answering peoples questions as I was one to ask and still do sometimes but I do not want to do others work for them it makes me angry!!

I like the ones that go a little like this: "Hi my gecko has green and yellow puss seeping from every orifice in it's body, she's 3 years old and 29 grams, and regurgitates every time I force feed her. Is that okay? And when can I breed her? I don't have any money right now. Can you guys help me???"

Although this stuff can be annoying (belive me, I've dealt with it for nearly 14 years!), we all need to remember that all the 'newbies' there are out there are going to be the very people that buy our geckos. we live in a society of 'instant' answers, and people are growing more and more lazy when it comes to putting forth the effort to do their homework. There will always be those that act first, and ask later. As the leaders of the community, all we can do it put the welfare of the animals first and try our best to help.

Hard to believe, but I was a stupid newby not too long ago. I still get annoyed time to time, but I remember being the person asking the simple question. I learned most of what I know here, so the help I got wasn't wasted time.
