I hear the freezer is a good way to euthanize fish and geckos.
However...I dont think its exactly 'euthanizing' them (stands for painless death) because I'm sure freezing to death hurts real bad. Geckos dont hybernate that fast...

Reptiles Magazine did an article a couple months ago about how inhumane freezing is. Apparently the brains form ice crystals before death occurs. Just what I read.

I understand about just freezing....my postthough said fridge then freezer. I heard the fridge brings them into a deep sleep (a coma) basically they are not feeling a thing after several hours in the fridge...then you move them to the freezer to finish the job.

This is all hear say on my part i have never tried it and dont know of any one who has.

I believe that they still feel pain while in the fridge and have heard that they will die in the fridge after a couple hours. The fastest and least painful way to do it at home is a hammer. Debatable about humane or not, but if the animal is in pain (not being culled for cosmetic or other needless reason) then one can justify it. If you are breeding anything I think its good to have something else that can eat that species.

then a shot gun up close should do the same thing then right? That way i dont have to hit him/her in the head possibly missing....Oh God i can see it now, makes me shutter.

You guys cannot be serious. Anyone contemplating using a gun of any kind to euthanize a leopard gecko shouldn't even have one in the first place. A gun, that is. Just feed it off!

I would never. I don't think anyone would waste a shotgun shell on a gecko. Doing something like that could seriously injur them and anyone around them.

I understand the logic, but I could NEVER feed off one of my geckos. Being devoured alive does not sound humane at all to me. Also, I couldn't bring myself to give a fatal blow to the head, either. If at all possible get a vet to give a fatal injection, or asphyxiation by CO2.

Reptiles dont sufficate from c02 like a mammal. Not a humane way

feed them off to what? I would never have anything to feed them to. And why in the heck would I want my gecko eaten alive? Seems very cruel on your part. A shot gun shell would end it quick and have little to no margin for error, a very wide spread and an instant death.

how is it a waste? how would you hurt yourself? Any one incapable of using a shot gun to point at the ground and pull the trigger.....should not own one.

You should put "responsible firearm owner". Don't forget there are kids on here. You dont want them convincing their parents that they have to use a shotgun to cull the gecko. I just see that comment influencing at least one person.

I know what you mean Marcia about being eaten alive. However, that is the only method which would occur naturally. Yes obviously in a different circumstance and most likely not by the same species being fed off too...but if the animal is in pain as is and treatment is either impossible or impracticable then I see it as the circle of life. Wouldn't hurt more then when I pop off a meal worms head to entice a baby who refuses food to begin eating. Its all in retrospect and we see geckos as our babies and their feeders as less "important". I am not trying to justify to you, obviously you know what your doing and are doing it very well, it is merely my view of feeding off a gecko. On average we may have 1-2 geckos a year that need to be culled for underdevelopment or other non recoverable/liveable conditions. These few are fed off and every and anything else which may not be viewed as "perfect" is kept here, used at local schools for educational purposes, adopted out, etc.
