i got my first leo 15 years ago from a pet store. i never had a single problem with him. my current shtctb female is from a major pet chain store and is doing wonderfully.
i now buy all my animals from pet stores but its a privet reptile shop called daves dragons but they sell tons of stuff heres a link im gonna be buying a snake from them here is a link http://www.davesdragons.com
the only reason i had problem with my first pet store gecko was because the heating broke down in my house. but really, they're not that unhealthy. In fact, they're average and do very well.
I bought my first two leos about a two weeks ago from a 2 different popular pet stores. They've been doing fine so far. I'm tempted to get some more, but I'm just going to wait to get some better morphs from breeders
Norah my female 1 and a half year old leopard gecko was bought from a store, and out of all my gecko's she is the most docile, well behaved and healthy. Ps. she is a lavender blush.
I have two geckos. I adopted both, and both were bought at large chain stores.
One, a female high yellow is a very healthy girl. Full colour, beautiful eyes. She is curious, active and a great eatern with a good personality. She's 8 years old and still doing great!
The other is a male who recently came into my care. A normal type. He's got missing toes on all four feet and a dropped tail which has grown in poorly. This however has nothing to do with the pet stores and everything to with the people who owned him previously. Regardless his deficiency he is still active, curious and a healthy eater. He's got good colour and good size.
I have one Leo that I adopted from a well-known chain store. She was up for adoption because she had dropped her tail. She has since regrown her tail and is remarkably healthy. She turned into quite a pretty SHTCTB and has a great personality. She's one of my favorites.
i too have/had two chain-petstore leos. one i still have is a juvi tremper who is doing awesome, the other was a poss. hypo lavender of some sort but i no longer have him due to an error on my part which lead to a much bigger lizard getting into his enclosure! but they both were doing great, and i plan to get more in the future
Though I don't encourage pet store purchases, it should be noted that not all stores are created equal. That being said, the two that I own from a pet store (same store) are from a store where I have seen some less than nice things. I still own both, and both are fine. At time of purchase, the first one was big and fat and healthy (and my first gecko) and the second was not, thus the purchase. He had the beginnings of MBD and was malnourished. He has been hard to put weight on and isn't massively fat, but he's fine otherwise.
I have had my pet store leo for about 10 months now. She is very healthy, happy, and loves human touch. I just got a second pet store leo, a hatch-ling, about 6 weeks ago and he/she seems to be doing fine also. The baby has one heck of an appetite.
I have three leos from *****, one was my birthday gift last year, she is a SHT and eats well tho doesn't seem to get over 40 grams tho she is very healthy and had no problems. I have purchased the other two myself, one is also a female SHT and this is her first year breeding (Stubs) whom i assume lost 1/2 her tail to a cage mate long before I got her. A great eater and no health probs had for over a year. And last but not least is my Aries, he is a Murphy's Patternless that is also a super eater and is his first year breeding with Stubs to see if either are het for Tremper. I have had no health issues with any of these three. I also have a Normal female i got from a small family owned petstore that was housed on sand there but has had no health issues and is also a wonderful eater..So all in all I h ave been very lucky with my geckos from petstores...I do not plan to buy another from a pet store BUT you never know what happens when u walk in there! LOL
So 4 geckos from pet stores and all alive healthy and no problems...I would say I am above average but the ***** here houses them on repti carpet now and has about 5-10 leos in a cage all usually quite young..Stubs was the largest in her cage at the time..I would say she must have been a fighter
It seems to me that many pet stores that sell hatchlings end up losing animals due to issues with feeding them. It appears that many of my local stores feed crickets that are waaaaaay too big for the hatchling lizards they are selling. The problem is exacerbated when people purchase large crickets (since, at least in my area, it is difficult to get little or pinhead crickets) to feed to their hatchlings. This is all me thinking out loud though.
I'm curious - has anyone had any issues with hatchling geckos eating "too big" prey items? Or am I way off?
All of mine except Aphilia my SHCTB came from pet shops. I have not had any problems with any of them (touch wood). It's actually Aphilia who has bad sheds.
If a store bought gecko dies it is ussually not the petstores fault it is ussually an unexperienced owner (unless you are trying to rescue it and it was obviously poorly taken care of at the store or is the runt/has a bad diet/or has an infection etc...) and you cant blame the petstore if you buy the gecko at 5 months and is healthy then it dies at 3,4,5 years etc..
I have one from a chain pet store as well. I just recently got him and he's in the shedding stage so we will see how healthy he is with his eating habits after he sheds. Hope he eats like a piggie. :] The chain store I got mine from, didn't take care of them very well. Most of them are very thin, but mine was the healthiest looking one. Tazz is a juvie.
