Egg Binding and Weight Loss

Possibly one of my females could be egg bound. I would have expected her to lay the eggs a few days ago and I can see them. They have dropped down where they should have been laid. My female has also lost a lot of weight in her tail and she isn't eating. Is there anything I can do to help her lay other than the usual...which is waiting or a vet visit? Also has anyone used the appetite stimulant from Zoo Med? Does it work? I am also thinking about using liquid slurry to help give her energy to lay.

Any suggestions????

You coulds try a soak. Not eating sounds more like a symptom (of needing to lay the eggs) than the problem, so I wouldn't think that appetite stimulant is going to do anything. She may need a shot of oxytocin from the vet or may just need to wait another day or so.

I have had a female recently hold eggs for 7 1/2 weeks. I just continued to use warm water soaks and turned up the temps and increased humidity and she finally dropped them both. If its only a couple days I wouldn't stress it too much. Just try uping the heat and humidity a little and do some warm water soaks.

I think I am going to try some warm soaks. Thanks. Funds are really tight for a vet visit right now. Plus I need to find a good vet in Reno where I just relocated to.

She is relativly staying the same weight, she lost about 5 grams so far and it seems all of it came out of her tail. The tail getting skinny is kind of worrisome since I haven't seen that happen yet. But I did pull the male out since I was trying to rule out any stress factors.

Finally she laid 1 egg. I can't tell if she absorbed the other or not. But she is strange since before she only laid 1 egg and both times she laid it in the middle of of cage instead of in either of the hides. Both were moist and 1 warmer than the other. No where even near the water dish. Can anyone think why this would be?

Hi Cory,

I just had one of my females get egg bond(1st one ever)and I tried eveything before resorting to this but I am glad I did it or she would have died,I took a needle and poked it through her stomach and poked the eggs to release some of the yolk and after doing that she laid her eggs the next morning and she was back to eating,pm me if you would like more help.

Daidra, while that is a option, it is best left to a vet. Egg bound is talked about and assumed far more than it happens. I have had females that laid 4 eggs in 2 days.. double clutched.

I would have to agree with Daidra...as long as you are certain that they are egg bound which this one had to be. She lost nearly 10 grams from a month ago and I have seen the egg a lot more profound for almost 3 weeks now. Where normally they are ready to lay. She has been acting like she wants to lay but can't. Finally the egg came out today with out having to result in any type of treatment other than soaks.
If egg bound then there isn't much you can do about it other than spend a fortune doing a risky surgery. I have heard of doing this...but just like anything you just need to make sure you are using sterile tools and disinfecting the area.
Can anyone answer the question....Why is she only laying 1 egg at a time?

Daidra, do you mean that you used a syringe to get some of the yolk out? I would not recommend just using a needle to poke the egg because If the yolk leaks out into the oviduct you risk losing the animal to a secondary infection. Just wanted to clarify.

While I've never heard of this procedure before this is the first thing that popped into my head. I wouldn't do it I really don't care whose site it came from because every situation is different, etc you shouldn't use your gecko as a science experiment, because the risk of infection and the possibility of something going wrong and you poking into the wrong thing, IMO.

I am sure Jeff doesn't endorse you advising someone to poke a gecko with a needle.

I myself have done it with a syringe though ;-)
