How can you guys say that?!?
I am horribly outraged at the thought of taking a leo back just because he's sick!!!!!!!
If a loved one was sick like your grandma would you take her back?
What he needs is love and care and attention!!!
You should keep him even more for that reason!
It's a LIVING THING not a broken toy!
I would NEVER in a million years take my leo back because he's sick or hurt!:main_angry:
So you'd trade your gecko in for money!?!
That's HORRIBLE!
How could you even THINK that?
At least give him to a friend!
Give him to me!
I'll take him!
I still cannot belive you guys would that easily take him back.

he hasnt had it for that long so it is perfectly fine for him to consider taking it back and getting either a refund or a new, healthy gecko. since the store's job is supplying animal supplies and caring for animals they will be able to get the best help they can get for the little gecko that Michael cant since he doesnt have the money. it is the most responsible thing he can do at the moment.
taking an animal to the vet doesnt always mean just one visit and your pet is cured. sometimes treating an animal takes weeks or even months. its pretty pricey. if he doesnt have the money for one visit there is no way he can continue the necessary treatment the gecko might need. if he were to give it to someone else that means he would be putting unnecessary pressure and responsibility on them and he cant wait to ship it or for you to pick it up in the condition the gecko is in.

please dont make people feel bad about considering their options. everyone on this forum loves their animals and some even make money on them by breeding. so it is not a bad thing to take the animal back for a refund.

Michael, dont feel bad for taking the gecko back. you did the right thing. the gecko needed help and taking it back was the most responsible thing you could do with the lack of money you had.

I still completely disagree at how willing all of you were at getting a different "better" gecko. You should love the one you have and Micheal, I'm NOt trying to make you feel bad, I'm just don't like how everyone is SO willing to give up a gecko that quickly.

Just because he brought the gecko back doesnt mean he didnt love it.
The best thing FOR THE GECKO..FOR A LOVED ONE, is to get them treatment so THE GECKO/LOVED ONE can be HAPPY and HEALTHY..that means giving him the OPPORTUNITY to heal, and he COULD NOT DO THAT because he didn't have the MONEY. So, by returning it, he gave the animal the best OPPORTUNITY to SURVIVE. He did not hand it over because it was broken and he didnt want it. Think realistically about it, leolover

P.S. I'm not trying to sound mean, just try to take a step back and look at it objectivly.

I'm glad to hear the gecko is doing better [[to the best of your knowledge]].

First of all, I would like to say that "if" someone bought a gecko from me and it wasn't doing well, I would expect the customer to let me know about it. I would do everything in my power to help my customer and the gecko. If that didn't help, I would consider the circumstances and perhaps take the gecko back. Even the big chain pet stores have a better/longer guarantee than I do.

I think taking the gecko back to the store was perfectly warranted, especially if the buyer wasn't financially able to meet the costs of veterinary care. The gecko is better off NOT being in the care of someone who cannot afford a vet for their pet(s).

The same exact thing ahppened to my hatchling 1 month ago. I checked his floor temp and it was at 100 Degrees. I concluded that it was heat stroke because of the outrageos temp, and brought him to the vet. Apprarebtly it was the heat and partially MBD, that caused this. Now Ive been force feeding him liquid calcium daily and he has improved tremendously.

Excessive heat can cause the gecko's parathyroid gland to over stimulate. This part of the thyroid controls calcium metabolism, and if it is over stimulated it can leach all the blood and bone calcium from the gecko's body. Liquid calcium will help the effects of MBD.

Hey Shuffle, when I got my 2nd leo he did the same type of "seizure" actions. I was on chat with gf members & totally freaked out by it. He'd seize, pass out, I'd think he was dead and then hours later come back to. Luckily I have a herp pet in town. He gave us some medicine for what "might be a bacterial infection". We tried it. The screams from this little guy could be heard from the 2nd floor of my house. It was horrible! Not to mention it was bought for my 5 year old who was crushed to see his pet in so much pain. We brought it back to the pet store, with its medicine. I was reamed by members & told they probably threw it in a freezer to kill it. I seriously thought I was being kicked off the board for my actions. I still feel guilty, but at the time I thought I was doing the proper thing for the leo & my family.

I'm still here. We've since added 3 more leos to our collection & 3 cresties. All with the help of gf members teaching us the ropes. Please don't let the harsh words scare you away. After such a harsh intro to leos, I'd highly recommend going to a reptile show for your next "first" leo and getting it from a breeder. It's not to say that pet stores will never sell a healthy leo, but it's rare that a breeder would have one that becomes sick. Good luck!!!!

I STILL completely disagree...
I CAN see some of your reasoning,
but it's like "oh, just take him back"
when you should be caring for the thing and assuming responsibilty.
I just disagree (like I said before) with your willingness to give it up THAT easily.

Large chain pet stores have vets that make rounds to all of their stores. It's far more likely to get the care that it needs there than in the home of someone who wasn't financially prepared for an emergency vet visit. Almost all breeders have some sort of health guarantee as well as most pet stores. Like Marcia said, if there was a problem with a gecko that I sent out I would want to know about it immediately to rectify the situation. There's a difference between having a Leo for a year, causing an injury or illness and not taking it to the vet and buying an injured or ill Leo.

Its not just pet stores that have a guarantee. I adopted a little beagle mix puppy from the humane society in my home town more than 10 years ago. we had him for 3 weeks and he died from distemper, a neurological disease he picked up from the humane society shelter while he was there. at first we thought maybe it was just kennel cough but it worsened. he was constantly at the vet and eventually when the disease hit his brain we had to put him to sleep.
the humane society gave us our money back.
so its a standard thing among most people and places that deal with animals.

Have any of you stopped to consider that maybe it's a good prerequisite of any pet owner to have the funds to properly care for their animal should something go wrong?

Honestly, you take the gecko back, you apologize for your incompetence, and you wait until you've accrued enough funds to PROPERLY care for a new one. These animals depend on their owners entirely for proper veterinary care. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but seriously, think about it. By dinking around and waiting after like 20 people tell you to take that thing to a vet before deciding you didn't have enough money to do anything about it, you let that living creature crawl around in pain for however long you dilly-dallied. It needed IMMEDIATE vet care. In a truly good world, someone would go to your house, break your legs at the kneecaps and then wait to take you to the hospital, just to bring things into perspective for you.

If you CANT afford the vet care, DONT BUY AN ANIMAL.
