Thanks to Mel and Keith for bringing this up in another thread. :D

Anyone have experience breeding enigma x enigma that they'd like to share? I have not, but am curious about the outcomes. :)

If I remember correctly from a conversation that I had with Kelli on this subject (Kelli, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong in any way) Enigma x Enigma isn't very different than Enigma x anything else. I would assume that you may get a higher chance of producing Enigmas, but I doubt that it would be that much greater.

Well, it all depends on what kind of Enigma you have. Since the Enigmas are a dominate trait, the "het" version of the Enigma shows the Enigma traits.

Homozygous for Enigma (2 copies of the trait) Looks like an Enigma
Heterozygous for Enigma (1 copy of the trait) Looks like an Enigma
Homozygous no Enigma (0 copies of the trait) Looks like a Normal

With that out of the way, there are three possible senarios.

The first is Homozygous Enigma x Homozygous Enigma. This will create 100% Enigmas. Each of the hatchlings will have 2 copies of the trait.

Secondly is Homozygous Enigma x Heterozygous Enigma. This will also create 100% Enigmas. 50% of the hatchlings will have 2 copies of the Enigma trait while the other 50% will have 1 copy of the trait.

Lastly is the Heterozygous Enigma x Heterozygous Enigma. This will create all three possibilities. 25% will be Homozygous for the Enigma trait, 50% will be Heterozygous for the Enigma trait, the other 25% will not carry any Enigma genes.

When it comes to looking at an Enigma, there is no way to no whether it is Homozygous or Heterozygous for the trait. The only way to do that is test breeding.

If you do Enigma x Any other morph. 100% Enigma Hatchlings equals the Original Enigma is Homozygous for the Enigma trait. If 50% of the hatchlings are Enigmas, then the Original Enigma was Heterozygous for the Enigma trait.

OK, I'm confused. I thought I saw somewhere on these boards that there was no such thing as het. Enigma. I thought the story was, hatchlings are either Enigma or non-Enigma. Does anyone else recall having seen this?

This is true, they are either Enigma or non Enigma. Since the trait is dominate, you can have the Heterozygous form show as an Enigma. In other words, the Homozygous and Heterozygous forms of the Enigma look exactly the same. The only things they will affect is breeding outcomes.

To back Kyle up its like Spider Ball Pythons, the Homozygous and Heterozygous forms look alike.

I debated it, but have different plans for my projects. I am very curious to see the findings though.

To clear up any confusion... if you produce an animal from an Enigma X non Enigma breeding that is not an Enigma, this animal is NOT Het for Enigma.

I have done several Enigma X Enigma breedings and statistically produced 1/2 Enigma 1/2 non Enigma, about the same as when I have bred Enigma X non Enigma.
