I was just wondering how many people use filtered water verses tap water. My towns water comes from a lake, so I use a filter for all my critters.

We only give our geckos water that we would drink. Our tap water is quite gross. We use a Water Purification System called Small Boy made by HydroLogic. Here is a link with more information about it.

As David said we have a decent water filtration system. We use it not only for water in dishes, but also for spraying down animals with, and mixing in their food [like CGD for the Rhacodactylus] I was hatching out some weird stuff [conjoined twins, other deformities, etc] when I was giving my geckos tap water, and since the switch, I havent had any of the same problems.

That's frightening...
I've always thought that as long as I never went to california I wouldn't be at risk for cancer, since many things are only known to cause cancer in the state of california! (or am I reading those warning labels wrong? LOL)

when i first started, i used tap water and never had a problem. i will sometimes use it on the older ones, but i use purified on the babies. and on my favorite gecko Bear, she only gets Dasani water. i really like to spoil her.

I've been using purified drinking water (purchased from the market). I read somewhere that tap water has chlorine in it which can burn the gecko if you don't let the tap water sit out for at least 24 hours. This is also true of some plants. Does anyone know if filtered water has the chlorine removed from it?

Actually Steve, many many things in every state are known to cause cancer, but in California, state health laws require businesses post a sign anywhere where people many be exposed. For example, in california you will always find one of those signs in parking garages because car exaust is known to cause cancer. It's not our state that is cancerous!!!!!!!!!! Don't you wish your state told you when you are exposed to cancer causing agents?

Oh I know Hannah, it was a bad joke. I live in NY, and we have some of the highest rates of cancer in the country, especially breast cancer. Often attributed to our water.

But no, I actually am not a fan of government intervention in the smallest details of our lives (this coming from a federal officer... ironic)
I know I'm a little eccentric... okay, I'm not wealthy enough to be eccentric, so the right word would be crazy... but things like those warning labels and the tags on pillow cases just make me laugh sometimes! :p

Actually- I was using filtered water back in PA- forgot about that. That tap water not only tasted nasty but it literally killed some of my plants! After that it was all filtered for my fish, geckos, gerbils and plants. In MD I love the tap water so wasn't concerned, ditto up here in MA. I do let it sit out for a while before using it, though- to let the chlorine breathe off.

I would not recommend using distilled as that's pretty much h2o only. It can really mess up acid/base balance in blood... and really just concentrations in general. If you drink too much of that stuff you can actually drown! (Concentration of water is so high outside your cells it osmosis into them.) You can drown from drinking too much regular water, too, of course, but you have to drink like 2 gallons in an hour or something ridiculous...

I use bottled drinking water only. The water here is horrible. It comes out cloudy and nasty. It has so much calcium and lime in it I have ring around my pool of scum that I have to scrape off. We have a deal with one of those water companies and we get 8, 5 gallon bottles every 2 weeks I have a cooler upstairs the kids use for drinking and I just fill up bottles from there.

In Chicago, where I think we are supposed to have some of the "best" tap water, it comes from Lake Michigan. The lake is not even healthy enough to swim in most of the time. I know it is treated/filtered, but it still scares me that it came out of there! It smells and tastes kind of bad to me also.

We only drink it filtered, and our "kids" drink what we drink. I am not letting my geckos drink that crap. lol

In Ontario it's been tested many times to see if our water is healthy, it is therefore I drink tap water, guess what ALL of my animals drink it. When I did own turtles I filters there water IDK why just made me feel better I guess.
