Filtered water only. It gives me piece of mind. I also use filtered when misting my Cresties tank.

So I do use tap water, but I put dechlorinator in it. The same stuff I use to condition the water for my fishes. But it doesn't have all that extra "supports a healthy slime coat" or "denitrifies water" mumbo-jumbo stuff. Just gets rid of chlorine and chloramine.

for water to absorb into our systems.. .and in gecko systems... it has to have the same amount of solutes (salts) as your body, this is called an ISOTONIC solution. when you use distilled water, the salts are taken from the gecko's body and could possibly be detrimental. i have always used straight tap water (chlorinated) for my herps and plants for the past 40 years with zero problems. only fish need the chlorine/chloramine removed cuz it'll kill them.

good luck,
rob

FYI, tap water is not isotonic. Its hypotonic just like distilled water. Isotonic water would be VERY bad to give a gecko. Distilled water and tap water are both hypotonic and fine to give to geckos.

I use distilled bottled water, the chlorine and other chemicals put into tap water can be fatal to reptiles, just because we can drink it doesnt mean they can to, we can digest and process different things than they can, and chemicals in tap water can be very dangerous to reptiles. Which is why you should either have a water purifier or use bottled water, you can also use tap water that has been sitting in sunlight for 24-48 hours which cleans out the chlorine thats in tap water.

But some cities use different chemicals in the tap water, the sun only purifies the chlorine so you should make sure theres only chlorine in it if your going to use the sunlight method.

To be safe I recommend bottled water.

Does the water necessarily need to be sitting in the sun? I thought it just had to be let alone? I fill up water bottles and let them sit for about 2 days before using them, I thought that would be enough >.< Well so much for that lol. I'll put mine in the sun from now on

My Geckos don't drink water, they drink beer. A little Corona goes a long ways towards creating a happy gecko!

I keep a gallon of distilled water around and use it to spray the tank with. Since it's distilled, it won't leave water marks on the glass that you have to wipe off later.

As for water dish, I'm still debating between mountain spring water vs tap. I'm thinking about getting one of those brita filters to put in the kitchen faucet. Anybody use that?

Always gave all my reps spring water with no problems, my tap water is very hard. My American Pit Bull had a urinary track blockage due to mineral deposits and seemed to happen after I began giving him spring water and after I went bqack tpo tap he never had it happen again.

I have well water, so I don't have to deal with this problem... but, if I pretend I have tap water I'd say go with filtered water.
